Just wonder and how you got on with it :-)
- By Natalie1212 Date 19.08.05 07:16 UTC
My hubbie uses it, he loves it! He says it is very good because, it will give you a warning for FIXED speed cameras, and with his old software he had, you could only put part of the postcode in, and so it would get you to the general area, but not exact, but with his TomTom you can put the whole postcode in, so it takes you to the exact street.

He says there are a few other benefits that you wouldn't really think about until you have it working in your car, like how you can turn the screen around to landscape, so if you are using it in a van like his, the dash board isn't deep enough to have it portrait, so it makes it alot easier to be able to turn it round, just little things that make that bit of difference.

HTH :D

My hubby would love a TomTom, he thinks they're brilliant.  He's got a terrible sense of direction so it would probably be a good buy....only snag is, he doesn't drive :)
- By Natalie1212 Date 19.08.05 07:47 UTC
LOL Tyby :D That has cheered me up this morning!!! :D
- By Blue Date 19.08.05 08:29 UTC
:-D :-D

I was going to buy the Sat Nav that is permenatly installed but it doesn't cover Northern Ireland so looked that the Tom TOm go 500 or 700 , the 700 is the rolls royce but the extra expense maybe better in the long run I was thinking. I acts as a handsfree also in the car through Bluetooth.   Now to find a bargain ;-)

I am going to NI next month on my own so thought I would get it before then so I don't get lost on my tod in NI.
- By ShaynLola Date 19.08.05 09:09 UTC
Hi Blue

Are you coming to NI for the Belfast Champ show?
- By Blue Date 19.08.05 11:04 UTC
HI Yip coming to Belfast :-)  was there last year also. We have our breed champshow also the next day so makes it work coming. I am going to the same hotel as last year also.

TO be honest Belfast for me is like an open show, I am in Fife and it takes about 3 hours to get to the ferry and them that is me.. most of the UK shows are that far from me anyway except the Scottish one .
- By ShaynLola Date 19.08.05 12:44 UTC
Hi Blue

What breed will you be showing? I'll be there to spectate and spend a small fortune on the stalls.
- By Blue Date 19.08.05 13:46 UTC
Westies :-)
- By Blue Date 19.08.05 13:50 UTC
BTW if you have a tom tom you can make your way quite easily from ring to ring..:-D :-D

Now how many of you when you are at shows could do with that extra help.. or where is the ***** stall :-D :-D ( ps the **** was in place of a swear word just the name of a company) :-)
- By Blue Date 19.08.05 11:02 UTC
Thanks for all your replies :-) :-)

I am fine getting anywhere in the UK but the last 2 miles is where I get lost :-) and where I waste the most time.

I have Tom Tom Navigator 3 in my PDA - it's invaluable for my 'day job' which involves a lot of travelling......
- By Enfielrotts [eu] Date 19.08.05 08:35 UTC
My OH has just got a HP PDA and is going to download Tom Tom on to it, doubles up as a pc then, more uses than just sat nav.  We are intending to go over europe in our new Volvo XC90  so wanted a sat nav that we could update and also remove from the car so not to attract unwanted attention - also very handy for OH when he does Moto x and me for shows :)  The screen is the same size as the actual Tom Tom but the actual device of a PDA is much lighter and thinner so is easy to hide or carry about ;)
- By Kkirgirl [gb] Date 19.08.05 09:11 UTC
I've got the tomtom go 300 - my husband bought it for me two weeks ago when i passed my driving test - i have a terrible sense of direction which isn't helped by a terrible memory so i easily forget roads and what to go on to get where i want to be.

So far I've nothing but praise for it - the directions are clear and simple, it warns you in good time before you need to take the exit and sometimes even tells you which lane you need to be in 'keep left' or 'keep right'

Its really easy to put in where you want to go and only takes a second once your familiar with how it works 'navigate to - enter town/postcode - house number' and your off :) - i think its pot luck if you get the new or old model as the box is the same, the old one you cant put the full postcode in, the new one you can - however... you can download the software from their website to update it if you buy one of the older ones so its not a problem :)

Its easy to carry with you too - i leave the mount in the car and take the tomtom out anytime i leave the car (just to be safe) if you go walking or cycling you can even use it for that - there are settings to allow you to 'avoid motorways' if you maybe don't like them or 'walking route' if you are off on foot etc :)

Personally i think its better than the PDA solutions - its a big clear screen which you can refer to whilst driving to check what's coming up (it shows the surrounding roads in a very simple way that's easy to glance at) the touch screen is fantastic - no need for a fiddly pen thing and its built really well. My husband got a few for the builders at his work to use, they travel all over the country and so far even with them chucking it around they look like new :)

Anyway, as you can see - I'm in love with my tomtom and for the price, i think its one of the best value sat navs on the market.

You can also buy the more upgraded models as you said but it depends on what you want/need.

hth,

Rox

I've got the tomtom go, like Kkirgirl says it really is good. Like it that it gives you plenty of warning to junctions and to keep right/left in lanes especially on motorways which I hate. Nice clear voice, clear pictures and you can 'preview' your route beforehand so you already have an idea of where your'e going :)
- By Kkirgirl [gb] Date 19.08.05 09:46 UTC
:D do you use jane or tim - or a downloaded voice?
- By mackleback Date 19.08.05 09:52 UTC
These sound great!! My OH is ALWAYS going on about them...think he is hinting for Christmas! ;-) How much are they and where is the best place to get one?? I have no idea about these sorts of things!!! :D
- By Kkirgirl [gb] Date 19.08.05 10:42 UTC
I think mine came from Halfords @ £369 (normal high street price) but Dixons online have a special offer on at the moment - £361 but if you enter the pricerunner discount code 'pricerunner25off' you get £25 off - so its £336.

Another thing i forgot to mention - 'favorites' what a fantastic feature! You can save destinations you visit often and in two clicks can be heading in that direction - also 'home' is such a cute feature - no matter where you are just click home and it navigates you
- By Kerioak Date 19.08.05 11:07 UTC
<also 'home' is such a cute feature - no matter where you are just click home and it navigates you  >

Now that sounds a brilliant feature - I am inclined to try out different routes when I am not in a hurry and learn my way around the lanes etc, but because they frequently don't have sign posts or are very windy I often end up miles out of the way inspite of having a reasonable sense of direction.

I think you can play around in advanced settings to get it to take you on scenic routes or near to points of interests, you can get it to give you notifications when you are X miles away from things like a beach or entertainment parks or something - not got that far into it yet - currently using it to get me from a - b with the odd c thrown in :D

The 300 GO you can get for between £319 ( anyone wants the detials can pass this one on as I think he is the cheapest) up th £369

The 500 Go which also acts as a bluetooth for handsfree and a bit better maps than the 300 and a bigger processory.  I have been able to find a supplier for £435 they retail at £469

The 700 Go  is the most expensive one it comes with a harddrive and a bigger processor, has all the full European maps , has a remote control and again hands free blue tooth option.  These retail at about £549 and have found a source but still checking his supplier for £470

I think I am going to go for the 700 at the moment but still deciding. :-)

Oh I wish I'd had one on my recent trip to The Lake District, I did more u turns than a Politician ;)
- By mannyG [us] Date 19.08.05 14:56 UTC
built in gps in both cars , portable would be nice though.
- By Gillie [gb] Date 19.08.05 15:36 UTC
They are good but to be honest ours seems to send us on the long route as we tested it on the route to Lincoln which we know very well, and it took us over a toll bridge which we didnt know existed and took us a very long route.

Having said as much if you dont know where youre going at all then theyre great. I prefer them to pre-installed gps as you can place it where you want - i.e. in your line of sight
- By Kkirgirl [gb] Date 19.08.05 15:51 UTC
you can change the settings to take you on 'the fastest route' and 'avoid tolls' - perhaps some playing about is needed to get it just how you like it?

For the first two days after passing my test i had it to 'avoid motorways' but quickly got bored of journeys taking longer than they should and took Hubby on the motorway - anyway, its now always set to 'fastest route' - motorways are not as scary as you first think :D
- By carolyn Date 26.08.05 17:46 UTC
Could you give me the details for the tom tom for the lowest price please.
- By Missie Date 19.08.05 16:28 UTC
I use Jane :) Didn't want to be told where to go by a man ;) Though I call her LULU :P
- By Kkirgirl [gb] Date 19.08.05 19:13 UTC
lol - i also use Jane, Tim is a bit of a creep if you ask me :D

I never thought about giving her another name, ive been calling her Jane these past few weeks - think i might confuse OH if i ask him where 'Sophi' is :DD
- By Blue Date 19.08.05 20:23 UTC
Some of the downloadable voices are quite funny I think :-) I would be driving around laughing to myself.

Today I took Junction 17 instead of 16 at 5.30 pm in Glasgow.. :-( now for anyone who knows that area on the M8 at night it isn't the best place to come off. Luckily I Don't venture that way very often but was picking up my old 88 year old aunty to come for a visit.

I think my Tom Tom will be in the car before 10 am tomorrow ;-)
- By Daisy [gb] Date 20.08.05 12:54 UTC
I bought Tom Tom Go 300 for hubby a few months ago and he loves it. The good thing is that it is easy to switch between cars, so we can share it :D Very ocassionally it has a hiccup and sends you in a circle :D but it sorts itself out if you ignore it and drive in what you hope is the right direction :D

Got one on my wish list for xmas.

Please Please santa, am a good girl honest :D
- By Blue Date 26.08.05 11:02 UTC
Just to let you know :-D I bought the Tom Tom go 700. Managed to get it for £505 :-)  Should be here tomorrow

"at the next junction turn left..I SAID LEFT"

ROFLO need to get my left and right sorted out now ;-)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.08.05 11:03 UTC
LOL! Our GPS-woman gets very tetchy when we take our preferred route over her choice!
- By Blue Date 26.08.05 11:05 UTC
Visions of someone jumping out of it and taking over :-) can you imagine how frustrated they get at us :-D :-D
- By Natalie1212 Date 26.08.05 11:11 UTC
I have had nightmares about that woman, all she ever says is "Please make a legal U-turn, where it is safe to do so"! And the noise it makes just because you are coming up to a speed camera, reminds me of the fair!! If I was driving and that thing blasted in my ear I would be more likely to panic and press my feet to the ground to get away from the noise!!! It probably doesn't help that my hubbie has put some amplified speekers in so he can hear it over the noise of the car/music/us talking, it scares the life out of me with its WHOOOO WHOOOOOOO - ing :D LOL
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.08.05 11:34 UTC
She should keep in touch with Sally Traffic on the radio, then she'd know that we don't want to go along a particular road because there are holdups on it!
- By Daisy [gb] Date 26.08.05 11:11 UTC
So does ours :D Although she does recover her composure quite quickly when she's seen which way we want to go :D

Daisy
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.08.05 11:32 UTC
We did have to turn off the sound once when she wanted us to park on the hard shoulder of the motorway to walk to a particular location! She wouldn't be told!
- By mannyG [us] Date 26.08.05 13:53 UTC
I like my drivesoft :D
- By Missie Date 27.08.05 21:05 UTC
We fell out with Lulu (jane) in Devon last week. We wanted to get to canonteign falls from Dawlish and was doing ok till we found we couldn't take a left off the A380 because it was blocked off, roadworks, so we did a U-turn as requested then realised she wanted us to cross back over to take the turn we couldn't take. Turned her off and reverted back to map reading :D I did argue with her on another occasion when going to Newton Abbot. I KNEW it was in a westerly direction from where we were but she wanted me to turn eastwards and I refused but she caught me up and we carried on. Well, didn't we get stuck all the way from Dawlish, through Teignmouth then when we got on the A 38 (I think) another queue due to road works!! On the way back I followed her instructions even though we went passed signs to Dawlish but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and lo and behold she took us back to the caravan site a totally different, traffic free way through countryside. It took 1hr 45mins to get there, and 32 mins to get back! :D :D
- By Caroline Neal [gb] Date 27.08.05 20:56 UTC
We have a NavMan. You can pick them up from Halfords. Its great as I travel with my job. Only trouble is that I wouldnt know how to get anywhere without it now as I have stopped watching for landmarks!
