Our 2 currently have milbemax tablets at £5 a piece. Does anyone know where you can get them cheaper than the vets or a cheaper alternative. I know some places do frontline etc but a prescription is required. Does the same go for wormers??? I don't mind paying the price but if you can save a few pennies here or there then all the better. Thanks

try canine chemists - do a search on google - they are good and cheaper than the vets

Try http://www.vet-medic.com/ or
http://www.wormers-direct.co.uk/catdogorderform.html but this one is expensive :(

Thanks I shall check them out. I can't believe that vets can get away with charging some of their prices. I have a friend whoes daughter is a pharamsist and apparently they are trying to get a bill past (or something like that) that will enable vet owners to take their prescription to a chemist and get it dispensed at a smaller cost as many medicine are common from pets and humans. That should bring costs down!!!

Does your pharmacist perform surgery at any hour of the day or night? ;)

Besides, a few years ago it was made illegal for vets to prescribe drugs which hadn't been licenced for use on animals - so many of the common, effective and cheap drugs were suddenly off-limits. Is this the law they're trying to get repealed, so we can go back to the days of cheaper drugs?

I don't know I'll ask him next I'm there. LOL. I don't know the ins and outs but the gist of it is there are still alot of treatments that are used for humans that vets can prescribe (at a price). Molly had a bad stomach upset and we were given sachets of a human powder that was added to water. We unfortunately didn't pay human prices for it. As we're only had dogs for 2 years i didn't realise that used to happen. It would be nice be have the cost reduced slightly. How do you all put the smiley faces in. I can't do it!!!

By law vets can only prescribe drugs that are licenced for animal treatment. In the past they could also prescribe those which were licenced only for humans, if they were likely to be more effective, but that was made illegal. Sadly, that meant a lot of the cheaper drugs were banned - at the time I had a dog who fitted, and her medication bill went up from about £3 a month to about £12. :(

Well that must be the one they are trying to get sorted. His daughter says that some of the treatments have a human equivilant that does the same for a fraction of the cost. Fingers crossed.

I thought taking a prescription elsewhere was already allowed?

Yes it is, but you generally have to pay the vet for the prescription, and it can only be for medicines licenced for animals.

I hope so. But it's not something anyone can blame the vets for - it was one of the governments bright ideas.
