I just found out that Dexter died last November. Does anyone know why - other than old age (he was 9 and a half)? I'm interested because
we have his brother,  Ch. Boduf's See no Evil (Jerry), in our prominent in our pedigrees. Repeat breeding. Both these dogs moved so beautifully - Jerry produced such nice heads, also.

I don't think Dexter was bred much, but if any breedings are known of, I would appreciate that information.
We have a Jerry grandaughter we are hoping to breed eventually, and would like to go back to this bloodline if possible.

Thanks so much!

Hi Shawna,  I co-owned Dexter, from buying him as a pup at 12 weeks old.  He was put to sleep last November due to the re-occurrence of a spinal problem.  He had an operation to fuse vertebrae several years ago, and made a miraculous recovery.  He had had two relapses, but this time we knew it would be unfair to try and nurse him back to mobility - it was his time, a very hard decision to make.  However, even though he had been retired from the show ring since he was 3 he never lost his sparkle.

Far from not having sired a lot of pups he sired over 200, including Champions in the UK, USA, Scandinavia and Ireland.  His lines are still continued, in both parti colours and solids,  indeed, one of his black daughters has today whelped a litter of 4!  Since his retirement from showing he has been top stud dog and top sire in the breed, in 2 consecutive years.  He has also made a couple of TV appearances, taken part in several charity events and dog walks, and even been a model in a grooming competition.  In a recent edition of the KEnnel Gazette, featuring the breed, I was so proud to see that several of the breed experts featured chose Dexter as one of their all time greats in the breed.  So good to see pics of him in print again!

If you would like any further info about him, please feel free to e-mail me,  gwen.oake@virgin.net , as i am sure the rest of the board would be bored if I carried on about how wonderful he was!

I always like hearing how wonderful any Yankee is! I just loved his name, it was such a great name! I bet you miss him, I would miss my boy, annoying coatless wonder though he is! :-)
- By gwen [gb] Date 25.08.05 22:09 UTC
Hi Lucy, Thanks, yes it is a wonderful name - just to carry it on we named one of his daughters Handbags at Dawn.  However, he almsot got a quite different name, as his breeder contemplated christening him "Buries the Hatchet " - you have to add the affixes to get the full effect.  However, he decided to stick with our original choice and let the joke go, for which I am eternally greatful :) .

Dawn, it is Kitty's mum who has had a litter today, her final one -no black and tans though!

Hasn't got quite the same ring, Handbags at Dawn! I think Buries the Hatchet would have been fun! One of my friends named her dog 'Misbehavin', then when she went to her intended home it was 'Misbehavin' at (affix)', which was a fun idea. I am looking forward to one day breeding a litter and thinking up funny names!

Not at all Gwen, we all know he was one of the greats in dogdom.

Dexter was my inspiration to join the breed in the first place, and I would certainly never tire of hearing about him.

I will never stop getting bored of hearing Dexter's name yes i wasn't showing yankies at that time but i have seen some lovely pictures of him, I have to say though Choice is the one I love to bits, she has as well as Dexter given the breed such a boost.
They will never be forgotten!

Hi Lucy, as Fiona has said Am Ch Cashmere Matadors Last Dance For Afterglow, was imported from the USA in whelp with the litter that contained Sh Ch Afterglow Ambrose and Sh Ch Afterglow Arrabella. The pups were born in quarantine in Sept 1998. I have a litter brother of Ambrose and Arrabella, he's called Levi ( Afterglow Abacus) never shown, he has an undershot bite. In naming him I was trying to think of other imported things and Levi jeans got the vote for a name.

I have to admit i saw Ambrose and Arabella when they were 2 by 2, my sister worked for Sue and Ralph until they left, i went up there at times and helped out, i will never forget choice shes was a amazing bitch! so now you all no why i love her so much! :)

Yes, Choice was certainly one of a kind - the perfect brood bitch, producing Chamion after Champion.  Don't know if you know, but she was mated to Dexter for her 3rd litter, and produced Sh Ch Afterglow  Prunella.   For one bitch to produce the top Gundog for 3 years must be something of a record 2000, 2001 & 2002)  :).  She only made 1 ring appearance in the UK, at Crufts  taking the RCC.  Before coming to the UK she was already the mother of a litter of 6 - all American Champions.    In all she is the dam of  4 UK Chs and  10 overseas, and of course her grandchildren have an  impressive collection  of CCs between them, not forgetting Douggie, currently Top Dog all Breeds! - quite a record for 1 bitch.  She was also a great character, interested in everything. and commenting on it!  She had been de-barked in the USA, so had a voice somewhat reminiscent of a seal bark, very distinctive!  It was very poignant that Choice, Dexter and Riot all died in the same year.

Ok i was about 10 then :O but i remember her as clear as anything, i do look at Ed and Hettie and see that expresion and the eyes, i did wonder if mike had seen the same at crufts, just the way he looked at him got me thinking....

Oh thats a point Gwen why didnt Mike show Choice much over here? Yes i did see that she was mated to Dexter, and wasnt the result gorgeous, Prunella was as lovely as them both, Choice and Dexter gave Mike some lovely lines which has produced CH after CH. Gwen it says in the paper this week Dougys number 2 all breeds...i take it hettie gets it from her then in to everything all the time! and Ed barks at the smallese russle at times, but hes very lazy! remind me again who was Riot? i wander if there watching down on there relitives in the ring......:)

Hi Fiona,  Riot was Ch  Tejas Conquestador, the Afghan Hound.  Choice was not shown again as her maternal duties were more important.  And, of course, she was in a cut down trim, too.  Then there was the fact that Ambrose had started his show career., with Arrabella following closely, and then Johnny.

Ohhhh i remember Riot, Afghan! didnt he win group at crufts or something? I see what you mean about Ambrose and Arabella in the ring as well as Choice would have been chaos, i seem to have thought she left the kennels in full coat or am i wrong? ok who was johnny :o i keep forgetting sorry...
Fiona
- By gwen [gb] Date 27.08.05 18:25 UTC
Hi Fiona,  No she was never in full coat, she came from the USA in cut down trim, and was shown  (on that one accassion|) in sort of half coat.  We also had Hugo at at that time too, it wouldjust have been too many Blacks out at the same time.  Riot was a She (confusing name, I know) and she was placed in the group at Crufts 3 times !!!!!  Her last Crufts, as an 11 year old veteran, she came out of retirement to take the RCC - it was wonderful!  She was the sort of show dog who made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, so much prescence.

I have to agree with you about Riot there she moved like am absolute dream! it was one year at crufts i watched her in the group. I didnt realisr she took the res cc at 11 that must have been brilliant!

- By f.a.brook [gb] Date 27.08.05 14:50 UTC
Hi lucy, yes Arrabella is Dougys mum and his dad is the darkehaven dog so Choice would be his grandma aww how lovely :)

I'd love to see that dog in the flesh one day, perhaps he'll be at Darlington when toys and gundogs are for once on the same day! Probably miss him in the ring while showing my Cav though!
- By f.a.brook [gb] Date 27.08.05 17:05 UTC
I am sure you will see him one day... to see all mikes go around the ring is a real picture they all move efotlesly at times i just wish ed would hes got it there just dosent use it!
Fiona
- By gwen [gb] Date 27.08.05 18:29 UTC
Hi LucyD, yes he is entered for Darlington, as are some of his offspring!  Cavaliers are usually not too far away from Yankees at Darlington, although of course this year we may have a completley different show layout, with the new showground.

Dawn,  of course, I am biased, but I think Choice has to be the most important import to the breed in the last 10 years.

Fiona, forgot to say in my previous answer, Johnny is Sh Ch Afterglow Bon Jovi, Choice's son from her 2nd litter in the UK.  Tabitha, his litter sister, had a gorgeous litter in June, and we are running on an adorable Black & Tan bitch from it.

Hi Gwen, I agree that Choice was the most important import of the last 10 years. She single handedly raised the game as far as movement is concerned passing on her tremendous reach, drive and pace, and certainly produced type to each dog she was mated to. Even the one that I personally, didn't actually care for.

- By f.a.brook [gb] Date 27.08.05 20:37 UTC
I have to agree with you there Dawn she has given the dogs in the ring that are conected to her the corect reach and drive leaving lovely open side gait, that just takes your breath away! she has also put her stamp in the heads time and time again i look at a dog and can say that has got choice behing it! then i look it up and it has!

Excellent, I am going with a friend who shows English Springers so I will be pottering around the gundog rings as well as my own! I'll look out for him. Ah, if only my Yankee was as good as my Cav. Still, it evens out - both breeders were asked for something if possible that would not be too embarrassing at an open show, and the Yankee is useless (for show, he's gorgeous for everything else of course!) and the Cav has a CC, a ShCM, just missed his JW (which I am still cross about) and two Firsts at Crufts!!
- By f.a.brook [gb] Date 29.08.05 09:39 UTC
That will be lovely for you i am sure lucy! lets just hope trafic dosent bother Mike again! ;)
Fiona
- By Dawn-R Date 27.08.05 17:04 UTC
Yes, you could say that Choice founded a dynasty, she has been extremely important to the breed in the UK.
