Hi tippytoes
forgive me for sounding dense ( that time of month lol ) what is a "pup tread" tyre? :-)
- By Tippytoes [gb] Date 25.08.05 13:55 UTC
I'm always like that :D
I got it from pets at home and it is a thick rubber tyre. It has a gap running around the inside so you can also pop treats in it. The boys love it :)
- By janeandkai [gb] Date 25.08.05 14:01 UTC
thanks tippytoes
i had visions of having to go round the neighbourhood looking for a small tyre to pinch :D :D lol
- By Moonmaiden Date 25.08.05 13:57 UTC
LOL I have three cavaliers, ome baby BC & a very large GSD

I have no preference for size I like the breeds for what they are & I have a friend who breeds Shelties & I would have one of hers in a heartbeat if she could breed me a B&W lol
- By Goldmali Date 25.08.05 14:46 UTC

>I have no preference for size I like the breeds for what they are

Great attitude Moonmaiden! :D :D Couldn't agree more! :)

I have a yorkie and what he lacks in size he makes up for with attitude.....  Hes the first small dog I have owned but the biggest nightmare.  Hes easy to own due to his size, as people have said easy to handle and get about but hes difficult to handle due to his attitude, defo case of small dog syndrome.

Previous dogs I have owned are Golden Retrievers and staffies.  Big or small I love um all :-)

My reason for picking a small dog is not because I prefer them but because my mums not steady on her feet and if a yorkie jumps up he aint going to knock her over.
- By redstaffy [gb] Date 25.08.05 18:14 UTC
dont u stand on him or him trip u up cos hes too small
myself i think staffys r well the best
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.08.05 18:22 UTC
Nah too small :D
- By LeanneK [gb] Date 25.08.05 18:51 UTC
ha ha No he seems to know to keep away from my mum when shes walking, also he aint that small really he is about 12inch tall, which aint big compared to other dogs but he aint one of those little delicate yorkies.  I would love another Staffy...........
- By redstaffy [gb] Date 26.08.05 10:35 UTC
I WOULD OWN LOADS OF STAFFYS IF I HAD  MORE ROOM I ALREADY HAVE 3 AND EVEN THOW THEIR BIG AND STOCKY THEY STILL MANADGE 2 WHIP ME UP THERE GREAT THOW I WOULDNT HAVE A DIFFERENT BREED
- By Moonmaiden Date 25.08.05 18:54 UTC
I never thought I would like cavaliers, but once I got to know them as a breed they are such clever little dogs with huge personalities I was won over, quite a lot like a mini BC's you have to be one step ahead all the time ;)
- By Blue Date 26.08.05 07:59 UTC
Me too :-)  I have a fancy for a few breeds just not got enough time and space to keep them all :-). Maybe one day

My OH love the Newfoundland , Irish wolf hound , labrador and the schnauzer

I still miss my boxer for insane loveable nature and I have WHWT. I love the giant schnauzer also.
- By Sheltpap Date 26.08.05 10:45 UTC
It's been interesting to see what people's opinions are.  Wouldn't it be terrible if we were all little clones, all liking the same things.  In reply to Brainless, I also do have a cat and a rabbit!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 26.08.05 10:50 UTC
Ah but I wouldn't really class a sheltie as a little dog in the toy bracket.
- By Sheltpap Date 26.08.05 13:09 UTC
No neither would I class Shelties as little dogs, not compared with the tinies like my papillon.  Must agree with the housetraining comments thought as the pap has been a monster.  Door open and still comes in to do her business.  We are almost there now (almost 7 months) but I wouldn't like to call her reliable.  If it's wet outside then the kitchen floor it is.
- By Goldmali Date 26.08.05 14:02 UTC

>It's been interesting to see what people's opinions are.  Wouldn't it be terrible if we were all little clones, all >liking the same things.

Yep, we'd ALL have the same breed and presumbaly all other breeds would die out. :p

im a medium dog person i think.  I dont mind small dogs so long as they arent yappy :)
i love my staffie and will never be without one, the perfect size for a lapdog and they r a big dog in a small package :D  however, i adore my rottie, but she just doesnt fit on the sofa with us.   I dont think i could ever realistically own a larger dog than a rottie
- By ShaynLola Date 25.08.05 20:58 UTC
I met my first giant breed dog when I was 3 years old (a Pyrenean Mountain Dog) and I've been hooked ever since. I had my photo taken with it and every time I looked a that picture when I was a child I would tell my Mum that, one day, I would have one of those dogs. Then as I got older, I discovered Newfies and thought they were even better 'cos they're not white and therefore don't show up the dirt so much!! :D The day I brought my Newf pup home was the realisation of a dream for me and life with her is everything I expected and more besides :) The only other breeds I can imagine myself choosing to own besides Newfs is Bernese (although i have definite soft spots for Tibetan Mastiffs and Leonbergers). There's just something about the gentleness of the Newf that I love. But then there's my Crossbreed who isn't giant (although at 25" in height and nearly 8 stone, he's hardly insubstantial) who I love dearly and feel that we every bit as lucky to have found him as he is to have found us. I would always want to have a rescue dog along with my pedigrees and wouldn't be too concerned about size but as it's usually the big ones who are harder to rehome, i'd probably lean towards the lab cosses and the like. I'd love to rehome a retired greyhound at some stage but the OH isn't fond of them (but I'll keep working on him...he didn't even know what a Newf looked like until he met me and now he's as hooked as I am!). It's a good thing we'll be moving to the country (30 odd acres) in due course as I plan to have LOTS more dogs ;)

Little dogs are just not for me. i'm not keen on the personality of terriers with their 'little dog syndrome' (I've worked with too many men who suffer from the human form of this and they have always reminded me of JRTs). I can appreciate some of the smaller breeds as some of them have wicked personalities. And having just bathed my two, I can fully appreciate that little dogs are just more practical in many instances but what can I say? I just love my dogs big, hairy and drooly :)
- By mygirl [gb] Date 25.08.05 21:26 UTC
I don't think as they say size matters :) its how each individul breed affects you and in our case it happens to be a large breed.

Our 'large breed' have the most wonderful temprement and are so typical of the 'gentle giant' status.
That's not to say i don't like wee dogs i just prefer danes (not all large breeds ,they have to be a dane).

Its all down to personal preference.
- By Lokis mum [gb] Date 26.08.05 09:16 UTC
I've preferred medium/larger dogs ever since I was being potty trained  !

My grannie had a scotty, which would hide under the cooker, then come out & bite my bum whilst I was on the potty!    I've had a "thing" about wee dugs since then!
- By Daisy [gb] Date 26.08.05 09:22 UTC
We had a Scotty when I was little. Poor dog, she had been my aunt's bitch until she stopped breeding them and had almost forced her on my parents, who really didn't want a dog with two very small girls :( Janet (the dog) was never very happy around us, apparently, and eventually died of mammary cancer :(

Poor wee Scottie probably wondered what the heck it was :-)  :-D :-D

Not all little dogs are yappy! I've known some big dogs be yappier. There is an awful lot of generalisation on this forum!
I've owned medium sized dogs and small dogs all with very different personalities.
I feel a lot of big dog owners have a kind of snobbery and look down (excuse the pun) on small dogs.
- By Tams [gb] Date 26.08.05 07:13 UTC

MannyG:       How the hell would you know if you've never owned one? Did I hear anyone slag off your big dogs- no -                   you must be suffering from little man syndrome then? Making this better by getting a big dog eh?

Quote:           Many of the toys are hard/impossible to fully housetrain.
Some have an atitude that gwets them into trouble as they do't care they are small.
Don't see the point to the tiny/toy breeds as would as soon have a cat or go back to
                    breeding and showing the Rabbits.

Brainless:       What a load of cobblers- Most of the owners are to blame for their ignorant bliss when it comes to training,
how dare you tar all small breed owners with the same brush. Rabbits?
You need  to re-educate yourself mate, you oviously don't know the difference between the two?
You obviously had trouble sticking to the topics in school too, hence your CD title.

Suggest you use spellchecker too. But I guess in your little world, you're kinda perfect eh?(not)

Yes this is a edit to my previous post. Am I bothered - no. Do I care? Damm well do. Now could we just have some constructive comments at long last , not a load of irritating waffle from some members who don't give a damm about the feelings of others.
- By Blue Date 26.08.05 07:54 UTC
Tams, what side of the bed did you get out of.

>constructive comments at long last<

Personal attacks are not allowed on here and I think your post was very offensive. perhaps if you can delete some of it. Without any use of Smilies etc I am assuming you are serious in this post.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.08.05 08:02 UTC
Tams, as I'm sure you're aware, personal attacks are forbidden. As for criticising anyone's spelling, perhaps you should check your own (and the correct use of the apostrophe) - or perhaps you too are partially sighted?

Your post confirms the impression that many people get of small dogs (and their owners?) as being one of looking for a fight ... ;)
:)
- By Natalie1212 Date 26.08.05 08:37 UTC
Tams,

The OP didn't ask for constructive comments, they asked what everyone thought. I don't think anyone on here has deserved any of your comments, why can't people have a preference? Yes, it would be a great world if everyone had the same opinion's, but people do do not work like that, how would we be individuals if we all agreed on, or liked, the same things?

None of what I read before your post was meant maliciously, it is just people opinions - which is what the OP asked for!

If your opinion is that smaller dog's are better than bigger dog's, then you only needed to say it, not have a go at everyone who prefers bigger dog's, or should we all start asking you if we can have a different answer to yours?

Another thread that has gone the wrong way, just because of peoples opinion's, I thought this was a forum, not a play ground.

And as for personally attacking people, well first of all it is against the T.O.C.'s and secondly it is just down right rude - it is a b*oody good job that not everyone is of the same opinion of you! :D

Nat :D

I have a great dane (yes big!) and a flattie, so it seems I am biased towards big dogs, but I am not. I've had toy poodles, huskies, weimeraners, GSDs and dobies...... ok, looking back, I've only had one breed that was small (but I had 3 of them, does that count?). :-D

Dealing with loads of breeds all the time, I find that I am not really biased towards any breed or size. I have seen dogs that I didn't like in all breeds and dogs that I liked. For me, it is very much on the dog itself. I also find that breed generalisations go over the top, there is just sooooo much diference between individuals. Although motivations of the breeds are easily recognisable, but not necessarily temperament or personality.

I have met yappy little dogs, adorable loving ones and aloof, independent ones - exactly the same as any other sized dog.

I guess for me, I can give big huge hugs to my big boy, but at the same time I like picking up and cuddling the little ones too.

Oh... decisions, decisions......
- By mygirl [gb] Date 25.08.05 21:56 UTC
Patty what a lovely post i couldn't have put it better myself!

Its all down to each individual (dog i mean). Big or small:)
- By Sarah Gorb [gb] Date 26.08.05 08:17 UTC
I do prefer the mid to large size dog having had a collie x gsd and now a rottie. I think it came from being chased down a hill by a dauchand (not sure that's correct spelling) when I was a small child. Also, I felt safer having a bigger dog in the house when I lived alone.

I was at a friend a couple of days ago and she had someone else over with her chau, and I asked how big she would get to get the response that thats it, not bigger. I would be scared about stepping on her, she could fit into a small handbag.
- By Bluebell [gb] Date 26.08.05 12:00 UTC
Well I have always liked my dogs on the large side, but most of all I like them to be people orentated, low fuss kind of dogs. Having said that since meeting some local Norfolks I would love one, such a big personality in a small package,  and a cocker is probably next on the wish list.

The main problem is that my Labs are bullied something rotten by our cats, so what chance would a smaller dog stand :D
- By mannyG [us] Date 26.08.05 13:59 UTC
HAHA Tams , you are a joker. I've been to enough dog parks to know that the small dogs are usually the ones playing fetch and avoiding the bigger dogs (like mine). It wouldn't be to fun if a giant rotti trampled a miniature shnauzer now would it?

Seems like your to much of a wuss yourself to get a big dog am i right? Little man syndrome , your a funny women. I'm a big man in every way babe , i'm not being arrogant either :p
- By Goldmali Date 26.08.05 14:08 UTC

>Seems like your to much of a wuss yourself to get a big dog am i right? Little man syndrome , your a funny >women. I'm a big man in every way babe , i'm not being arrogant either

Hey Manny, a REAL man will admit to liking whatever breed he happens to like, regardless of size! He will know he's still a man even if he likes a tiny dog . Like my hubby who will just as happily wrestle with a Golden or Malinois stronger than him, as lay on the floor kissing a tiny little papillon puppy. :D  (Is it possible to do a smiley face with a tongue sticking out, that's really the smiley I needed here!!)

Glad to see someone's got a sense of humour here MannyG!!!
Yes I have had a bigger dog before my former beauty was a  lab/boxer cross and she was as good fun as my little one is now!!! She went to Rainbow bridge aged 18 years old. I still miss her!!
- By mannyG [us] Date 26.08.05 14:29 UTC
Ah marianne , i don't get big dogs because they make me feel "big" haha. Just all the breeds that i like seem to be big dogs and honestly the only small dog i really do like are westies , i just don't have one :p. I'd probably get some westies when i retire , lap dogs!

Basically my cats give me the feeling of the "small dog" :p
- By LJS Date 26.08.05 14:33 UTC
I prefer medium to large dogs to own but do have some friends with ickle dogs that I do quite like :)

One of which is a wire haired Xcross terrier who is my little buddy :)

My mum has two mini Dashies and they do get on my nerves  Partly my mum's fault but I find them irritating as they are yappy and have lost count of the times I have trodden on them or fallen over them :)

I like bigger dogs as I can have proper big cuddles and they don't drag their bellies in puddles ;) :D :D
