Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / signs of anxiety???
- By kizzy68 [gb] Date 26.08.05 08:32 UTC
I have a 7 yr old GSD bitch Kizzy and a GSD puppy Kody just over 14 wks (Had him since 9 wks) I had a few probs at first with the eldest being a bit aggressive with the pup, but they are not too bad now, although I only let the puppy play with her for a short time as he gets a bit OTT,  Kizzy is a bit jealous and has torn up all his soft toys etc. However Kizzy has now started to contstantly lick her feet and legs, I noticed last night that there is a small sore on the side of her leg and the same on her foot, I  am almost sure it is caused by her constant licking, do you think this is a sign of stress/anxiety because of the puppy.  Obviously the young one takes up a lot of my time, but I have over compensated on Kizzy playing with her (She never played indoors but now brings her toys in) just like a child.  Thought I would wait before I go to the vets just to see if anyone else has ever had this problem.

Licking is self comforting as well as often serving a purpose, so it could be stress - but best to get it checked ofcourse.

Hi there,

Sounds like your Kizzy is a bit stressed by the new pup. Make sure you try to keep to the same routine at home as before. Keep the dogs separated until they get used to each other. No need for them to play together at the moment, especially is Kizzy gets OTT (as this will teach the pup to play roughly). You just need to make time to play with each individually. Maintain Kizzy's top dog status and don't give your pup more time and attention than Kizzy. In the wild, the top dogs have the best resources and puppies understand this very well. It seems that the hierarchy is being disturbed (which GSDs are very sensitive to) and you need to re-establish it and go back to your normal routine. Just make time for both dogs and put them together whilst out on walks, as this usually means that they will do their own thing separately and play will not get OTT.

If you keep having problems, then nip it in the bud and contact a qualified behaviourist through your vet, which will be able to advise you properly (and see the exact problems themselves).

Cheers,
Patty
