There are many potentially dangerous complications of pregnancy and whelping. Breeding from a bitch can be a dangerous and life threatening thing to do. This is why we always advise new breeders to think carefully about their reasons for putting their much loved bitch through it. We always try to make new breeders aware of the neccesary health testing for a particular breed, and the reasons why only the most healthy dogs and bitches should be used in a breeding programme.
You should, if you haven't already, joined one of the breed clubs, they can tell you what health screening is required, but most need hips scored and eyes tested, by specialists, not by a GP vet.
Get yourself a copy of 'The Book of the Bitch', it's available from Amazon, and will explain all sorts of things you should know. After that it's in the lap of the gods, assuming you have done everything you should and not missed anything out or taken any short cuts.
