Depends how far back you want to go. Originally the Akita was bred as a hunting dog - often used to hunt bears. They were also used to herd cattle, as military guard dogs & for falconry. Unfortunately, they were also bred as fighting dogs, but the Akita was (& is) a family dog, devoted to his family & protective of "his" children. They are not aggressive in that they rarely start a fight - but being so powerful they will certainly finish one &, when it comes to other dogs they are very assertive & just have to be top dog. Sadly, like every other macho breed & every breed in which money is to be made, some have got into the wrong hands & have been bred from regardless of temperament. A good Akita would never attack a human without severe provokation & definately never a child unless he had completely misinterpreted a situation (he is only a dog after all). Don't forget, even those bred as fighting dogs had to be controlled by human handlers, so aggressiveness towards humans would not have been bred for.
The Akita is a truly wonderful breed.
