Topic Dog Boards / Health / removing elastoplast from fur

Hi there people, a simple dog question... My dog currently has a foot bandage on due to a broken toenail (stepped on him! poor guy), and is annoyed at the stuck fur in left over elastoplast in his arm-pit and is licking it causing (or maybe due to) irratation. Any ideas on dog-safe things to remove the sticky stuff? (water doesnt work) or is it time for the clippers...

Nail varnish remover on some cotton wool will work a treat but the acetone in the nail varnish remover acts as a drying agent so do wash the area very throughly after use. Please do not use if the skin is broken - it will sting !

Replying to myself... Elastoplast themselves say that
1) use baby oil *over* the bandage and let it sit to soften the adhesive and get it off. Also suggested for humans...
2) use alcohol (rubbing alcohol, isoproponal, also found in some antiseptic wipes) to remove the left over bits.

I havn't actually tried it yet, the bandage is still on, but i think it would work

As for nail polish, im not sure whether the acetone variety or non-acetone would work. I would also guess that the orange-oil goo remover might work, it hasnt irritated my skin when I've used it. But i know a dog's skin is quite different...

Surgical spirit always gets "sticky stuff" off and is harmless as far as I'm aware.  You can buy it in any chemist. :)

Nail Varnish Remover ( not just nail varnish - imagining dog with a bandage multicoloured !) will dissolve the glue far better than plain ethanol or methylated spirit whether it's the mineralised or not variety - spot the scientist !  Using ethanol wipes takes longer that acetone or to give it it's proper name propan-1-ol, both actetone and ethanol belong to the same family in organic chemistry and both will sting on broken flesh
