I am looking for a good quality waterproof coat for one of my BC's. he is OK when it is cold but is unhappy being wet. It is raining here today and is fairly windy and he is snuggled up on the sofa in his (hand knitted from chunky wool ) blanket. I take my dogs out in all weathers regardless so not walking him is simply not an option. He would be OK as long as I can keep him dry, it's the combination of wet and cold that bothers him.  I have found one that I like the look of here:

Has anybody tried one of these or something similar on their dogs? Opinions please :-D  He has measured at 23", this coat would fit him but most are either 22" or 24"

Hi,

I have two very similar for my Schnauzers - they have 100% waterproof material on the top and lovely soft warm fleece on the inside, i originally bought one for my eldest to keep his joints warm on walks, i bought one slightly larger to cover his back end (sits up a little on his tail but still does the job well) i was really impressed with it so bought my youngest one too.

As for the size, as you have a BC and their tail doesn't stand up - i think you could go with the 22 or 24 (the 24 would probably cover his hind legs a little more like my old mans) the only thing that matters is that it doesn't overhang too much as it can be uncomfortable when they sit down. The neck and girth are adjustable with velcro fasteners so there isn't a problem there. As its mail order, you could always order one, try it and if it's not right - return it for the other size :)

The only 'negative' thing i have to say about them is that they tend to sit just above the shoulders so their neck is exposed, if its cold and windy (no rain) i wrap a small homemade wooly scarf around my old guy and tuck it in the front to keep him extra warm, pup doesn't need it, he is off keeping himself warm :D

I think they are fantastic; the ones i have are machine washable and dry in next to no time so they are practical too.

Hope that helps.

Covering his hind legs would be better as he has hip displasia and I have been told he will develop arthritis especially in his left hip as it was injured. I'm not so worried about him sitting down as he doesn't do much of that when out walking LOL. I am more concerned with whether it moves while they are charging around and most importantly it must keep him dry. I quite like the look of the heavy duty coat but the padded waterproof one claims to be their warmest coat so it's decision time..... Think I'll e-mail them

I can see a couple of problems with this dog coat!  It has no darting over the bum (stops them blowing up in the wind) and is fixed with a single surcingle.  I've used this type before and found they slip badly!  I get a lovely lady who makes horse rugs to do mine.  She uses x-surcingles and darts the materiel over the bum.  They never move (v. good for active dogs!):D

Aaaaagggghhhhhhh!!!!!! HELP :-(

Hmmm, yes - mine does have darting and it doesn't blow up in the wind (perhaps that's why :D) but as far as slipping goes, ive never had a problem, as long as it is the right size there shouldn't be a problem.

Kkirgirl, where is yours from?
- By Kkirgirl [gb] Date 24.08.05 13:09 UTC
I bought mine from the local pet store - ive just had a look and it has a badge on it 'dirty paws' the ones i have are green with blue trim and blue/green/red tartan fleece on the inside. It also has two reflective strips on the top of the coat.

They were not overly expensive - not too cheap either. They were used all through winter and when they went into kennels and have done fine, they are always dry and if you put your hand under its toasty warm.

Perhaps bob into your local store or superstore to see if they have anything similar :)

I have already checked out my local petshop and what they have isn't really suitable. It seemed easier to start searching on the web. I think I may have the perfect one, I am just waiting for the company to reply to my e-mail. The wax one is what I was thinking of as mymonster tends to run into the undergrowth and I do walk in an orchard regularly, more so in the winter, I don't think the nylon one will stand up to the abuse!

Hi Colliemad,
They are very good rugs, though a bit expensive.  You're right about the nylon, it's not tough enough for undergrowth!! :D.  Have tried them!
Will PM you with the lady's tel. no. who makes mine!

I am just trying to decide whether he would need the extra bit on his neck!

Hello colliemad, fancy seeing you here! :D My older boy has a wax one as I wanted something to keep him dry but not overheat him as he runs like a loon with the others, inc. into the undergrowth. Good luck. ;)

Kkirgirl,

"As for the size, as you have a BC and their tail doesn't stand up "

Spice BC's tail is forever up and wagging :D :D the only time it changes position is when she is running full pelt toward a tree and it then goes round in circles acting as a brake or change direction rudder :D :D

My Cav's tail goes round in circles when he's running free, glad it's not just him that's weird!! :-D
