Has he been licking his bottom? It may be that his anal glands need expressing...
no licking of the bottom. but he did have poo like mustard a couple of weeks ago, cleared up now tho. he has got some plaque on his teeth at the moment, seem to have come on all at once.

Do you brush his teeth? I brush my dogs' teeth and give them Dentastix too. Not that it helps in the case of the Yankee who is a real scavenger!!

Is it definately not lip fold eczema? My Irish Setter gets a very fishy smell around his mouth when he has this. I simply clean the lip folds with betadine antiseptic and it clears up. :)

Could be ketones on his breath. If it's very obvious, I should get a blood test from your vet.

Jane,
A placque buildup can result in really terrible breath. You may just have noticed it, but it takes a long time to build up to the point where it's really obvious to you if you don't check his teeth regularly. If the placque builds up in can erode the gums and cause some really terrible problems and infections.
I'd take him to the vet and would not be surprised if he recommends teeth cleaning.

Hi ther sorry for the delay, went to vets thurs tea time, and then took him back this morning for his teeth cleaning, he had a small dose of ginitivities and is on antibiotics, his teeth look very white again, and he also had a tiny puncture hole in the top left of his lip. he is sleeping soundly on the rug next to the fire, and just looks at me now and again to make sure im still there. he spent most of the day with the nurses upstaires at the vets as he wouldnt go down staires to the kennels, i did tell them that he wouldnt as at home he is not allowed up and down stiares. thankgod hes home and well.
thankyou everyone for your advice.

So pleased he's home safe and well :) It's such a worry if they need a GA but dental problems can lead to so many other things that it's worth it being done sooner rather than later.
Glad he's OK now. Best wishes, Teri
thankyou teri he is still sleeping, had a little supper wanted more but dont want him to be sick.
