Hi everyone, can any one give me any advice on staples.  My dog has cut his paw so i took him to the vet yesterday, he put two staples in his pad.  I have to take him back on Thursday to see if it is healing, if not he will have to have an anesthetic to have it stitched.  If it is healing the vet said the staples have to stop in for 10 days, the problem being I am going away on Sunday and my friend is looking after the dog.  I know she will take him to the vet to have the staples removed, but i was wondering if it would be possible to leave them in another 3 days till i get back and can take him myself. Thanks in advance.

yes it will be absolutely fine for 3 days. I staple all my own dogs & often leave them in for 10-15 days, without problems.

thanks sam,  do you have good results with staples and dogs pads.  I really dont want him knocked out and stitched again as he only had this done about ten months ago. It is the pad which does not touch the ground so there is no pressure on it.

TBH I have never stapled up a pad. We have had some really bad cut pads over the years :( but I have never stapled them as I have considered that to be more painful for them to walk on than the cut pad itself! I tend to just bind them up for a few hours to stem the bleed & let them heal themselves. I think you must mean the stopper pad....I have actually cut these off when they have been hanging lacerated :(.....but still prefer to bandage these fleshy pads rather than staple them.

Sorry to have to say when my girls pad was stappled it didnt heel and so she had to have the loose bit removed under GA as it was too late to stitch it, the loose part was dying back. Hopefully yours will be fine I suppose it could depend how bad the cut is Wish had 5 staples put in.Let us know how he goes on

hello everyone, thanks for your replies, we have been back to the vets {thursday] good news is the staples seem to be working, the vet said that the staples can stop in for thirteen days till we come back from holiday which is god news and they may have to stop in longer.  We have to keep his exercise light which is a shame as he is a cross greyhound and loves to run.  Hes always cutting his feet as he runs so fast hes a bit fed up with just walking round the block.  Hell be stopping with my friend for a week and his best friend a labrador so at least hell have someone to play with even though he cant have a proper walk.  I think he knows as soon as he gets a bandage on his foot long walks and runs are out, he looks so sad. bye for now, zach.
