My Golden Retriever bitch has recently had a litter and all are doing fine.  We have chosen one puppy to keep and will sell the rest.  Our bitch has been a great mum but we notice that the puppy we have chosen to keep is getting a lot more 'correction' off mum than the others.  Whilst mum is gentle enough she concentrates very much on the one puppy and will even make it squeek a little from time to time.  We leave mum to it in the main believing 'mum knows best' but are concerned that as time goes on there may be friction between the two as the puppy gets bigger - does anyone know if this behaviour is usual?  Thanks Carol P

It is normal for Mum to be harder on the bolder pups and more encouraging with the less forward.  She will be of great help to you, it is far worse when you have a bitch that does not discipline her young from the start, as they are more likely to be a problem later.

My BC puppy was with his mum until he was 13 weeks old(along with his brother who the breeder is keeping)the result is I have a puppy that does not nip & has never even offered to. His mum has disciplined correctly as my GSD bitch is continuing to do here

So yes your bitch is doing what comes naturally & teaching her puppies their manners
