Hi

I recently bought a blue roan cocker spaniel puppy. When taking him to the vet for his injections and check up. The vet said only one testical had dropped and that if the other does not drop then he will need surgery later at it may lead to cancer. I bought the dog to breed from and hence phoned the breeder who said if the other testical at the age of 4 monthes he wont and she will take the pup back. However I have heard that sometimes it can take longer than this age. I wondered how common this problem is and the odds of his second testical droping. he is an exceptional puppy, now 3 months old. At present nothing of a second can be felt. He has a wonderful nature and is other than this show potencial.

Yes they can drop later than this but the thing is, do you want to breed more pups whose testicles don't drop until a late age? (or not at all)   Surely the breeder would have checked whether he had both testicles before leaving? as they knew you wanted to breed from him.    Are you absolutely sure that they aren't normally present but disappear when you 'feel' for them??

In your position I would ask the breeder to check him and ask them to demonstrate to you, sometimes they can 'disappear' if the dog is handled too roughly or checked too often ;)

Retained testicles have been known to drop at up to 12 months of age, so don't start panicking yet! However, at three months of age he can't be anything more than 'promising' - certainly not 'exceptional' ... that wouldn't be possible with a mjor problem such as this ...
