Hi guys,

I am suspecting an eye problem with my bitch, possibly PRD. :-( I've taken her to the vet and he thinks it is retinal degeneration, but he can't be sure. However, I'm considering taking her to a specialist as I believe there are a number of different forms of PRA and PRD.  And a number of secondary complications that can arise as a result.  I really want an accurate diagnosis even though they may not be able to treat it. So I'll be asking my vet for a referral tomorrow.

Anyhow, I know breeders eye test for breeding, where do they get it done?  Is it through vet referral?  Does anyone know of a good eye specialist in the North East area? And any other advice or assistance would be really, really appreciated.

Hi Spender,

Sorry to hear about your girl :(  can't advise much on eye testing as my own breed just tests for juvenile cataracts at the moment.  I always get mine done at SKC champ show because they have a qualified canine opthalmologist there but of course he is qualified for the full range of eye problems.

Perhaps someone in your breed club can help you with info of where there's an eye testing clinic planned.  An ordinary GP vet doesn't do the multitude of tests for the various hereditary defects although I'm sure could refer you to a local specialist.

Hope all goes well.  Teri :)

Spender - John was extremely knowledgeable with regards to eye testing and I think he may have had a list of specialists throughout the country (he certainly knew of the ones down south, but I am not sure about up north). You may like to contact him :)

You are right to see a specialist - I had my two tested at our club show, a canine opthamologist held a testing clinic at the venue throughout the day.

Good luck with your girl - I hope everything is okay.

Thanks for your comments guys.

I've noticed a sheen coming from her eyes and the pupils are not pin pointing as they should.  It looks like classic PRA but I can't be sure without testing.  I suspect semi blindness too.  She was a rescue dog and I don't know if her dam or sire were tested, although probably not - I traced her breeder. Nuff said!  How do I get in touch with John?

If you look in Dog World there are usually some eye testing sessions advertised and there are generally some taking place in the North East.
