Topic Dog Boards / Health / Orange spots on nose???
- By xenaqueen [gb] Date 21.08.05 10:36 UTC
This is a strange one.......

I have a 20 week old bitch.  Five days ago i noticed a small orange spot on her nose, when i looked closer the orange was at the base of her whisker like on dots on the end of her face .
(hope you know what i mean)

Today i have noticed two more  and also noticed that the first one i spotted has turned from being orange into like a crust.....each one is only very small !

Does anybosy have any idea what this might be?

It sounds like acne. My pup had this at about the same age, he still has some in fact. It should clear up itself, but keep an eye on it to make sure it doesnt get infected. Maybe give it a clean every couple of days just to make sure. HTH :-)

Someone has just told me they think they could be harvest mites.........

I dont know anything about harvest mites, but what you described sounded exactly like the spots (acne) my dog had (and still has). It first appeared on his chin, then that cleared up and he now has a few on his muzzle at the side of his mouth (where his whiskers are). We took him to the vet when it first appeared and they said it was Acne, and that it is quite common. :-)

I have heard that Harvest Mites are nasty little critters, but know very little about them. My FCR suffered from doggy acne as a pup, but I don't recall the spots being orange in colour. Maybe a trip to 'Nice Mr Vet' may be in order.

:)

Yeah.....my pups were/are more yellowish than orange, but turned a bit darker once they crusted over. I would take a trip to the vets too, if still unsure. Just in case. :-)

Edited to say: Is your dog itching the spots?? Because if it was a harvest mite (or any insect) bite, then i think it would probably be itchy.

Only black or liver spots are acceptable ... oh sorry! Have I misunderstood? ;) :D :D

JG I have a telephone number of someone who can help with your 'spot addiction'. Its totally confidential and they have helped folk like yourself in the past. In the meantime, Dr Liberty suggests a LARGE G&T and some rest ;) Make that several G&T's :D

It is possible that they are harvest mite check between her toes to see if she has them there also. If they are I would spray some frontline on some cotton wool and wipe over  them it needs to be the spray as the spot on doesn't clear them.

She does keep rubbing her face on the grass.........so maybe they are itching her a bit...

I would say that they are quiet likely to be Harvest Mite then as thats where she will have picked them up from
