I have a two year old boxer bitch who was mated on her 11th day and accepted the male quiet willingly with a 20 minute tie, it is now her 19th day and she is still bleeding very heavily, dark red blood. Is this normal with some bitches as I have never experienced this before, usually I find that the bleeding stops after a few weeks and changes to a light pinky colour. Could anyone advice me whether or not this is normal or not??
Do you mean 19th day into her season?? My bitch carried on bleeing longer than usual this time, until day 24 and it was quite heavy. She had 6 pups no problems at all. I think some dry up after mating and some don't, it doesn't mean it hasn't worked so I would treat her as in whelp until you know for sure. Did you have a premate test done to evaluate wether she was ovulating?
Hi Chocaholic, Thanks for your reply. Yes it is the 19th day of her season. No we didn't do a premate test as we own the stud dog and the 11th day was the only time that she would stand, he would have mated her every day given half the chance but we thought that it was a succesfull mating so didn't put her through it any more. At least the whelping date should be fairly acurate. It is a relief that the bleeding is normal as she is still quiet heavy and I was getting a bit concerned as to whether or not he had damaged her although she didn't make a noise when she was getting mated and was fairly laid back (not literally ha! ha! or there would of been a problem).
Thankyou for your Reasurance and will presume that she is in whelp.
hi there,
I had a bitch that bled all the way through her pregnancy! The vet said early on that there was no way she would carry her pups. She went on to produce 12 pups but unfortunatly did not produce any milk to feed them with!
I had to hand rear them myself.
