Topic Dog Boards / Health / Puppy - vaginal discharge
- By xenaqueen [gb] Date 07.07.05 15:50 UTC
Hi

I have a new puppy, she is 15 weeks old.  I have noticed for the past couple of weeks she appears to be very sticky around the vaginal area and I have noticed a slight discharge there sometimes.

She doesn't seem unhappy in any way....does anybody know what this might be, do you think a trip to vet is required?

It may be vaginal, it may be urethral either areas are possible infection sites for certain young bitches whose anatomy does not seem to "fall into" place until after a season leading to inadequate drainage of any secretions.  But definately a trip to the vet as an infection in either site can track up to the uterus or kidneys and cause more serious problems.  Incidently if it is as I describe this is a bitch that will definately not want spaying until after a season as only sexual maturity seems to place the organs in the correct position and tilt to avoid problems in the future.

Hi i have a 12wk old staffy who has the same problem although this only happens when passing urine it is green in colour , i took her to the vets who gave her an injection of antibiotics and a course of SYNULOX which finishes today but the infection is still there does anyone have any further advice?

Take her back and get tehm to vulture the infection and prescribe a specific antibiotic.  Sounds like this is resistant to the Synolux or not long enough course.

Will do am goin to make app tomorrow she did say last time to bring her back if it didnt clear up and take a water sample for testing but am worried about the cost? She is covered by kennel club till 30/08/2005 with the 6 wks free ins. Do you know of any good ins companies?

No new insurance policy will cover a pre-existing condition - that will only be covered by your existing policy.

Yeah I'm with JG, stay with the Kennel Club, at least for the first year.

These infections sound like they might be Urinary Tract Infections, so if I were you (both) I'd take a urine sample to the vet when you go.

My vet told me that it was vaginitis and would clear after her first season.  It has cleared even though she hasn't yet had her season.

I have a bitch who has the  same problem, been to vets a few times but her vagina is set back and apparantly her first season will allow the vagina to go back to it's normal position and the discharge wont be a problem.
I clean her a few times a week with Hibiscrub, well diluted, and the discharge comes and goes, p.s she is 10 months and no sign of a season yet !!

Hope that helps, good luck

Another reason for not spaying prepubescent bitches.  Someone I know despite breeers advice had their bitch spayed at 5 months and she was always getting urine scald and vaginitis/cystitis.

Took my dog the vets who is still none the wiser as to what it is? There was no blood in her urine only small amount of white blood cells she has given me another course of antibiotics TRIMABAC 1.5 once daily if that doesnt clear it up she will take her in for X-RAY to check everythings in the right place and kidneys functioning ok? anyone ever heard of this?

Just a thought, but I had a discharge in my Belgian bitch and was very concerned as i hadn't seen it before in my first bitch; after examination, the vet told me that some young pups/bitches do get a discharge and that it's perfectly normal. I was very surprised if not shocked, felt she was right.

It's always worth checking for any problem though, as it could be potentially serious of course.

Was the discharge from your pup green and only happening when urinating? I am extremely worried but as she is ok in herself am hopeful that it will come to nothing. She is due at the vets again tuesday will let you know the outcome x.

I have been to the vets today with my 10 week old pup who has a discharge, vet said it is common in pups and I think he called it vaginitis or similar.  He has given her some antibiotics but said it could recur again and not to worry unless it becomes too bad or troubled her.  it would clear up when she has her first season or is spayed, whichever comes first.
She is definatly not feeling ill with it.

just an updatetook my 14 week staff to vets again tues seen a different vet who basically said sometimes these infections? take a long course of antibiotics to clear up and has put her on the same course of tabs she has just finished but has gave her a 2week course instead of 1 and 1.5 tabs twice daily instead of once daily.
