Jesus. Thats terrible :( I hope that poor woman gets some justice out of this.

That's terrible, but it backs up all the things my vet has told me about chips and the law. :(

By the same theory of course, it means household items marked with those special pens probably can't be returned to their owners either....

I was told that ID that cannot be removed (tattoo or UV marker, etc) is different under the law - there's something about a microchip being a separate entity. I didn't understand it fully, but I got the impression that it's only the microchip itself that belongs to the registered owner; the item (dog or whatever) it's implanted into is still separate ...

I honestly don't know what to say :(
And in answer to Mel. the car is quite safe, a hunk of rusting metal takes priority over a beating heart, or so it would seem :(

Unfortunately then, the same problem could be had with any other 'tagging' system such as tatooing :(
Daisy

What I meant was...it is a very similar system ...IF Tracker or the other companies were to quote the freedom of information act at an owner I can just imagine the furore :(

Sorry Daisy you are totally wrong,I know that it would never happen with the tattoo register, but then it is run by dog people & not a commercial company
Don't forget this bitch was reported as missing !

But that could easily change :(
Daisy

What ? you think the tattoo register will be sold to a commercial company ? Sorry you are wrong again, that isn't what the NDTR is all about, believe me I do know what I am writing about

I'm usually wrong about things :)
I didn't say that it would be sold to a commercial company. I merely meant that unless there are changes to the laws governing the ownership/rehoming of dogs, I can see that any organisation may have problems passing on information, regarding the dogs on their register, under certain circumstances.
Daisy

Part of the reason for tattooing your dog is to get the dog back in case of theft/loss etc
The system works by the finder contacting the register, the registrar then contacts the registered owner if that fails(which it rarely does)then other enquiries are made including the breeder, tattooist etc
It is illegal to dispose of found marked property for 28 days & the finder/police etc are required to make active attempts to trace the registered owner/keeper
So if the dog had been tattooed it could not have been PTS so quickly

I know Mel ;) was just feeling a bit bitchy after reading about Penny :(
Would writting to your local MP help to stop it from happening again i read the very sad news about Penny. It would seem that no matter what you did to try to get them back if they were stolen the dog homes are a law unto them selfs. those resue people should be better trained.

Absolutely shocking - but it is impossible to pass judgement based on the information in that thread. It does appear that there have been mix-ups everywhere and anywhere. :-(
Not a good recommendation for the chip company tho, I think I might make a few enquiries tomorrow.........

It is so stupid and yes some jobsworth. The DPA is supposed to protect peoples information not hider their flaming identity..
The fact they are the owner means it is their information.
The chip people should phone the owners.
Wait a min that is too logical forget it.. lets leave the country is a shambles. :-(

I am disgusted!! We pay all this money to get our dogs chipped and think they'll be safely bought back to us if they're lost! We're even told that they should be chipped to protect them!! I think I'll be saving up and get mine all tattoed.

If the dog is with someone other then the owner surely this is a stolen dog . I would contact the police and ask them to come collect the dog and get it scanned ;)

I really don't understand what has happened here. As the owner of a 16 week old westie who has just been microchipped I am now very concerned. I would like to know who that particular company is so that I can check if it is the same one that I am registered with. I was also concerned about the post regarding the RSPCA who said that a potential new owner could keep the dog because the police would not be interested in tracing the original owner through the mc company. I have thought about tatooing too but understand that tatoos can be erased or wear off as pup gets older and that the pup has to be strapped down on its back.
>tatoos can be erased or wear off as pup gets older and that the pup has to be strapped down on its back.
None of that is true. I have a bitch who's 10½ and her tattoo (done at 7 weeks of age) is still legible, and like all tattoos is permanent. As for strapping down on their backs - that's complete nonsense. The pup is cuddled in your arms, the right way up, just as you would hold it normally. Adults stand or sit, as they prefer.

>As for strapping down on their backs - that's complete nonsense
Very true  They only need to be restrained to have "Love" and "Hate" tattoos on each foot :P

It wasn't the tattoos that bothered mine, it was the body piercing they objected to :D :D :D

Sadly of my 6 tattooed dogs, only 2 can be read. I much prefer tattoos in many ways but have had to give in to microchips due to this.

All my dogs tattooes are fine & the GSDs done in black 10 years ago is as clear as a bell 7 better than the German version which used the large SV clamps
Getting puppy done on wednesday, no strapping down & no it won't wear off.
Even my BC, who had black skin in his ears, tattoo was clear when he died 12 1/2 years after being done
Had my pup tattooed at 8wks, the NDTR vet who did it was jusr great, she carried it out quickly, and my pup hardly winced at all. Just a tiny squeak and it was over. I'd recommend tattooing to anyone as it has put my mind at rest that if the worst happened i've a good chance of being reunited. It's not expensive either at £20.

i had read that tatoo's should not be done in ears because some pups who had been stolen had their ear cut off so some tatooists are recommending tatoo on inner thigh, hence strapping down. where have you guys had the tatoos done on your pets?

No, tattoos are done on the ear. There is no evidence that stolen pups have had their ears cut off - in fact stolen pups with ear tattoos are more likely to be returned unharmed. The
National Dog Tattoo Register only tattoos on the ear.

Davy & Joan Hall got their puppies back because they were tattooed & for the record(again)no dogs that have been tattooed by the NDTR have had their ears cut off. The only dogs that have had this done are greyhounds that have been dumped by their owners & which have not been stolen
No NDTR tattooist would tattoo anywhere other than the ear as their equipment is designeed for ear tattooing & no where else
