Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / How will an 9 month old Westie react....
- By Poppys mum [gb] Date 20.08.05 10:13 UTC
I am Poppys mom's real human daughter!! and I wanted to know if anybody knew how Poppy whos 9 months old would react to another puppy in the house. She is a terrier and that probably will have a slight effect, also as she is a bitch and she is used to solely getting affection.

Any advice or experiances with introducing another puppy to the household would be greatly appreciate. Thanks xx

At 9 months, Poppy hasn't really gone through her 'teenage' years yet, so you still have a few months of possible challenging behaviour to go...  To make it easier on you, Poppy, and the new puppy it would probably be best to wait until Poppy is about 18 months and properly bonded with her humans before introducing distractions like another puppy (cute as they may be ;))

I have Bailey a 2 1/2 year old westie and have just recently got Robbie another westie who is 12 weeks old Bailey accepted him fine but does put him in his place when need be. I was really scared aswell but things have settled down and Bailey still gets lots of attention and he loves it when we treat the pup for toileting etc as he also gets a treat. Good luck.

I have Milo a 7 month old Jack russell and have now got a 9 week RottiexGSD they get on very well, although I make sure Milo is always first for fuss and gets extra attention so he doesn't get jealous.

Its definately best to wait until the first dog is an adult.

Before that, even with a good few months in between, they will just play as puppies do, bond together more strongly than with the owner.

Often two young dogs together DONT learn how to be sensible adult dogs, to them rough puppy play and no manners is acceptable so they will try this on older dogs. When a pup IS a small pup, adult dogs usually tolerate this and reprimand where needed. When an older puppy does it, a fight can ensue, the pup is not young enough to be granted leeway.

Wait till your bitch is approaching 2, has learned dog language and responds correctly to other dogs, then get a male puppy.
