Hi everyone, it's now been four months since I first posted about my Golden Retriever Abby, she has a spleen tumour removed and was very poorly.  I'm very pleased to say that, "touch wood" she is doing very well, she has just celebrated her 12th birthday and although she is very pale in colour (gums etc) the vet is not overly worried and is pleased with her progress.  She has had blood tests and ultrasounds to check for any problems as her first blood results came back with a low red blood count and she was pale.  Everything seems to be normal just her red blood count is low, she will have another blood test in October to see if it the same!  Most importantly she is enjoying herself, going for walks with the others and the occassional swim!  However another problem has occured over the last week the lower eyelid of her left eye has drooped and the third eyelid has gone up almost covering her eyeball.  She doesn't seem to be uncomfortable with it but it doesn't look nice.  She went to the vet last week and they checked for damage to the eye, nothing - they have given me drops to tackle any infection but as yet it is not responding.  She is due back to the vet on Monday/Tuesday but I wondered if anyone reading this had any ideas about what it is or could be??  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jan,
I'm afraid I don't have any clue about the eye problem but wanted to say I'm glad to hear your dog seems to be doing so well now :-)
Good luck for Mon/Tue,
:-)

Abby has been to the vet today as her eye is no better - there is no infection and no obvious damage to the eye.  The vet said it was very unusual he also said that it could be a partial paralysis or something pressing against the nerve.  Has anyone else had any experience of this?  We go back on Friday and if no better we will possibly see a specialist.  It doesn't seem to bother Abby at all and she is quite well at the moment - any ideas anyone??

Hi
Sorry, but I have not experienced this problem but it could well be something pressing on the nerve (the specialist is a good idea), and I wanted to say that I am so glad that Abby is doing well and I am sure that you are spoiling her rotten.

Jan,

Abby may have had a minor stroke, or, worst case there might be a tumour on the nerve or in the brain.

Small strokes are common in older dogs - and people.  If there is not infection I would not worry about it unduely.  As you said, you can ask your vet for a referral to an eye specialist.

Hi all
many thanks for your advice and good wishes, Abby is still very well in herself.  I wasn't sure about a stroke but this is a possibility although no other symptoms.  A tumour is what I am worried about as with Abby's history another tumour could pop up at any time, but c'est la vie as they say here in France we will wait and see and enjoy the time we have left together!  I will keep you up to date with Abby's progress.  Many thanks again for your good wishes!
