My partner has just returned with a load of used newspapers from work to start stock piling them. I think that it would be preferable to get unused copies.
What do you use?

Never occurred to me to use unused & I've never had any problems in 25yrs!

We collect newspapers from the surrounding villages for the pups all used, never had a problem, if there are going to have germs ( if this is your concern) they would have got them before the last people read them, through the production process.

I am lucky to be have access to unsold copies..This is what i prefer for whelping, but i have also used old copies without a problem. Once the puppies are 3 weeks old any paper will do!  Tracey

They're going to need changing so frequently that the ink won't be a problem!

Always used old ones with absolutely no problems at all.

Perfect,
Thanks for your responses. I have read the "Book of the Bitch" to the point of paranoia. It states that it is preferable to use unsold/unused copies of newspapers. Whether used copies are capable of harbouring harmful bacteria/germs I guess is debatable.
As we have had disasters with our only 2 other litters we are wary of anything that potential could cause a problem.
We are also at the stage of should we worm our girl from day 40 post whelping or not. The vet is all for it but it is a drug and again I am hesitant in given her anything that may.........harm the pups.
At present I think she is big for her 40/39 day being a small breed, carrying over 2lb her normal weight and would not want to jeopardise anything at this stage.

we use old papers
and my bitch only has 12 days left and i decided not to worm from 40 days on woulds, as i thought that was a lot to put her though.  i dont it as some came in to season and i will then do it the same time as the pups are done and i have done it this was for my last 3 litters and never had a big problems with worms

I hve wormed four generations of bitches from 6 weeks in whelp, and in the winter will be breeding the next generation, never encountered a proble with worming the bitch, though have wehn I have wormed the pups as often as advised and only now so them at 3 and 7 weeks as opposed to 2, 5 and 8.  My logiv being that if the pps were born with such low worm burden because wormed in utero they can wait an extra few days until established on solid food.

Hi Brainless, just wondering what problems you had with worming your litters? I wormed my bitch before she came in season then not again till the pups were 3 weeks old. Both she and the pups passed lots of squirmy wormies. I was going to do them all again on Thursday when the pups will be 5 weeks and then again at 7 weeks - is this too much? I wish I had wormed my girl while she was in whelp but I was too worried about side effects for the pups :(

I have a freind that collects all the free news papers that are in the boxes by the post boxes. I have always thought that this is a rude thing to do , as they are there for the public, I save my used ones.
