Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / dog barks at other dogs when out walks
- By newbabe [gb] Date 19.08.05 10:37 UTC
My affie is just past one year old and no matter what I do he loses it when he see's another dog when I take him for walks.. He barks like mad and I do not exist because his focus is not on me. I try to make him sit but he justs scwocks and screeches because I am stopping him, I get embarrased because of the noise he makes. When he gets to meet the dog he is friendly and there is no aggression it is all noise.I am in the process of taking a water bottle with me so I can spray him when he starts. Has anybody had the same problem and how do I sort it.

He walks lovely and does not pull or cause a rumpus normally only at the site of another dog. Also any ideas on getting him to come back when he is of the leash I try to let him of the leash as much as possible but he really does not focus on me.HELP

I take him to ringcraft classes where he does some obedience and he is good at it just need to get him to focus on me

Thanks for your help

Citronella spray collars work wonders and are humanely safe for barkers. No pun intended but the reason why your dog is not focusing on you because he doesn't find you interesting enough! Toys or treats , do they tickle his pickle?

-- Forgot to add , i have a friend who's got a very obedient sibe husky , everytime he sees one of my dogs he just goes nuts pulling howling and whelping. I think some dogs just get really excited.

Thanks for your help,my dog loves food but the problem is I had to stop giving him as many treats as he was overweight.  Someone did advise to get one of those collars do they really work because they are expensive but I am prepared to try any thing. 95% of the time my dog is brilliant  and do realise it is me that has the problem you have probably heard the saying train the owner to train the dog its just sometimes I am not sure what to do .

Thanks

If you take the treats out of his daily food ration (instead of as an 'extra') then he won't get overweight ...

Hi Newbabe
My dog does EXACTLY the same  - no aggression just loads of noise when he sees another dog. As you say, it's very embarrassing.
So I take pieces of sausage with me on walks (they're very well behaved on their leads !:) ) and, when there's no other dogs in sight, Buddy is entirely focused on me.  But an approaching dog is much more exciting than a sausage unfortunately.
To be honest I've given up - I just keep a constant look-out for other dogs and take avoiding action.  Cowardly I know but a lot less stressful.

you are SO not alone on this one!!! I have the same problem with my Gordon Setter who is nearly 2 - he is the softest friendliest thing, but he too goes nuts at the sight of some other dogs - he's only been doing it for a few months, and the ones he's known since he was a baby he hardly bothers with - I think its just he wants to run over and play etc, it just looks worse cos he is so big now. He too is not to be distracted by treats or anything, I also am using the avoidance technique - just like tyby, much less stressful and am hoping he will grow out of it, he is getting calmer and calmer as he gets older - being a setter he is nuts!! when he does calm down and is around 3 to 4, I want to get another one, and hopefully wont have the same problem with that one!

Yes those spray collars do definately work. I have one for my dogs and when they have it on, they either don't bark, or just give little 'Uffs'. I got mine online, on DogDayz. I found them to be cheapest, about £40 inc. P & P. Can't remember the website but put dogdayz into google and it should come up.
Good Luck

Spray collars may stop the barking, but what other behaviours then come forward to replace the barking?  A dog needs to be taught what you would like to replace the barking - just like children, if you stop them doing one thing they will find something else to replace it, which may be even worse :(
