Help Help Help!

I have a bitch and a dog, the bitch is in season but they have already mated in the past and we dont want to go down that road again!! I can not keep them both together in the same room as the dog screeches and yelps to get hold of the bitch. I have tried separating them but not getting anywhere because the dog is trying to force the door down, even keeping one in the back garden is no help.. I am eight months pregnant and having sleepless nights due to all this. I have also sending them to friends and family but still no joy!! Please can anybody help before i go insane! I dont want it to come to where i have to get rid of one of the dogs for good. ALL suggestions welcome AND needed.. Thankyou Rachel.

Simple answer would have been to have had one of them neuter5ed after last time.   As you are finding keeping both sexers in the average home entire is no joke.  Can't be of much help other than have the dog boarded away until the bitch has finished her season.  It is why I have only bitches living here, it was bad enough having a male staying when he was supposed to mate with a bitch.

Alot depends on your  house/home layout. We have no trouble here keeping them apart but have plenty of room to keep in season girls well away from the boys. if this is not an option then you need to send the dog (not the bitch) to kennels for 3 weeks. (or to a friend/family or whatever).
it is extremely unkind to allow the dog to become frantic for the bitch.......so a different location for the dog for the critical period is essential.

It is important that he does not go into the psrt of the garden where the bitch goes to the toilet as all that happens then is that he knows exactly how her season is progressing and will be frantically trying to figure a way to get to her.

In homes where it does work is where the dog and bitch can be kept right apart and use differtent parts of the garden.

Hi Rachel,

Might have been an idea to have had the bitch neutered long before now :(

If you have absolutely *no* foolproof way of keeping them apart and have no method of housing one elsewhere, then book your male in to the vet for tomorrow morning and have him castrated.  Not my preferred choice of animal husbandry but if you have genuinely exhausted any and every other option then I don't see what else you can do.  I'd also recommend having the bitch spayed in around 3 months time.

Regards, Teri

Unfortunately Teri a dog can sire a litter even some months after castration.

This bitch had a litter on her last season - why on earth didnt you have her spayed afterwards?Your dog will be even worse this time around. The best thing is to put him with family or friends or failing that in kennels. And for goodness sake have her spayed.

You are going to have to put your boy into kennels for the time being - it will be about 3 weeks - but you're not going to be physically able to keep two determined dogs - who have already mated once - apart in two weeks time.   For your own peace of mind, I would advise that you have your dog neutered NOW, keep him in kennels until your bitch is out of season.   You won't then have the same problem next season - in fact, you would probably be best advised to then have your bitch neutered half way between seasons - otherwise, in 6 months time, when you have a baby of your own, you could be having nightmares keeping other dogs away from her!

Actually, some dogs do react to in-season bitches even after they have been castrated  and they can and do mate as well (just no puppies result) so just castrating your male may not be sufficient to stop his distress, especially as he has already mated her ;)

My two borzoi boys are neutered, one doesn't bother at all when my bitch is in season but the other gets just as upset as he was before he was 'done'. I wonder if it depends what age they're neutered at? The easiest option I think would be to board the dog out just now and then get the bitch neutered in a couple of months  :)
