hi, ive got a staffy and hes just turned 1, Hes got rearly nasty towards others dogs, i cant take him out any more on my own as he goes for every dog we see and trys to pull me towards the dog, could anyone tell me how to stop him doing this and why he could be doing this, im thinking of getting a bitch for him but im not sure how he will be with her. Iv been told to cage him but i dont like the idea of that , hes a rly gd dog apart from this, any help will be helpfull for me.

Hi
Your very best option is to find a good training class to get some help.  There's a staffy a our club which behaved like this. His owner has worked hard and he is now a LOT better.

You definitely don't want to get another dog before your first one has been sorted out as the new one would only copy him.

thank you marianne,
I will find out where my nearest club is and see how he gets on.

Hello Cazza. I have a similar problem with Murphy. When he is out on his own its not as bad but with his bitch he is 10 times worse.

I wouldnt recomend a bitch for him although this is from my own experience and not based on anything.  Mick

A bitch or another dog is the last thing you need at this point.  It won't help him at all and could possibly make him worse.  A good training class that focus's on behavioural problems is the best option for both you and him.  Best of luck :-)

I agree with the others...a bitch would only make him worse.
A crate is great for house training, preventing chewing etc but will not help with an aggression issue.
I would try a training class as suggested however you may need to accept your staff just doesn't like other dogs...its not unknown in the breed

Don't know how caging a dog outside would work :p

What about treat distractions before he has agressive incounters with other dogs?

Just be careful to time it right. I watched a woman with a Cocker once at our training class, and she timed things so badly her dog ended up getting rewarded every time it had a go at another dog. :(

Very true , good follow up! Kind of put a really strong smelling treat like cheese cubes or liver infront of him before he starts snarling at other dogs , then get him to walk straight while focusing on treat!

I've also seen bad timing. An elderly lady was in one of my puppy classes about 4 years ago. She had a SS and would give the sit command , the spaniel would sit then suddenly run off to another dog and she would run over and shove a treat into his mouth. haha
