anyone got any suggestions for a really really tasty smelly bait for a dog that will turn his nose up and spit out livercake and boiled liver?!  he is not really intrested in food anyway so need to find something that will really grab his attention and am running out of ideas.  tried most dog treats, cheese hotdogs and nothing seems to work!

I had one bitch who would only show for hot dog sausage, cut longways.  I would stand in the ring holding one end and swinging it up and down - yeh I know, but it worked!!

I just fry my liver, in quite large bits but not for too long, leave it red in the middle and add a bit of garlic, my boy is not overly food orientated but goes mad for liver that is not cooked all the way through - he also likes smoked sausage too.  Does he like toys?  It may be worth getting a small toy to grab his attention, my boy loves balls so I occasionally use a tennis ball (at ring craft but smaller ball would be needed for the ring, more discrete) as he is immediately alert :)

Edited:  I leave the meat like that as its also a bit floppy so you can make it look more interesting :)  Works for Bali anyway LOL

Like suggested what about a toy.  I will sometimes use one of those fury mouse things for cats?  Just don't use a squeeker because it's distracting to other dogs in the ring and is not good ring ettiqute IMO!

Cat toys are ideal size.  Just make sure your dog doesn't get hold of it unattended and use the toy for purly in the ring! :)

hi,
thanks for all the suggestions.  am hoping to find something that will keep him alert before the show at the weekend.  have not shown him much at all this summer in case he was just bored and his last show was in april, so hopefully he will be a bit more keen!

I have one bitch who I always have to carry Pedigree Dentastix for - some days she'll eat anything, other days she'll turn her nose up at everything but Dentastix.  I break them up into little bits to use as bait.

Quite useful really, as it's easy to just always have a bag in the showbag.

How about NATURE diet cake, my dog loves it! ( especailly the Fish one but I must warn you it does smell alot when cooking it )

Naturediet Nuggets

1 tub of naturediet (available most pet shops, its a natural complete wet food) ideally use something other than original or tripe as they stink when cooking.
1 garlic clove
1 egg
100ml water
160g flour (use a gluten free option for gluten intolerant)

Add naturediet, garlic, egg and water to processor, blitz and start to add flour until it becomes a thick cake mixture. Spread on a baking tray and cook at 180oC for about 20 mins. If your dog likes it quite moist then use once cool but I then cut into small squares and pop back in the oven at a reduced temp for about 15 mins so they become crunchy nuggets.

Have fun!

ooh, thats an idea  :-) as i think he will eat nature diet.  he does like tripe through but might try the fish one if the tripe one stinks that much!

Does the fish one smell really strong when cooked as well? I've been thinking of adapting my liver cake recipe for fish as my Cav loves tuna!

You could try this & use Tuna instead of Sardines

4 tins sardines or 1 large tin pilchards put into a bowl and mash with a fork.... add 4  eggs, as much garlic or garlic powder as you like. Stir in plain flour to make a consistency that will 'just' about drop off the spoon...put into a greased dish and cook for about 7 minutes in the microwave or cover with a greased paper and pop into the Aga until cooked. Freezes really well and if you get the mixture
right it bounces too.......

lol it does bounce !

I have in my bait bag:

Cut up tesco value sausage (washed so my hands don't get greasy)

Cut up cheese

Variety of small dog biscuits

Anything else I can find on the day of the show ;)

Mine are more interested because they don't know what I am going to pull out next ...the value sausage is the choice for them tho :D

How about Black Pudding Kelly? Yukky i know but works for Dana :D

Dried tripe sticks broken into really small pieces usually gets a nose interested, its really stinky but triple bagged should hide the smell.

CRAB STICKS!!!  My lot love them!  Buy the frozen ones, they keep better.
