Is it a breed and are they registered? i've seen the name mentioned alot. Are they banned or is the bandog name for another reason? Just curious as to what they are where there from etc.

They are a cross between a bull breed and a mastiff breed. No they are not banned directly although many may be of pit bull type and hence could come under the DDA

No a Bandog is not an official breed, as far as I know it's a mix of few other breeds. Mostly Mastiff/AmStaff and so on. I think mostly it's just a name for a massive so called "fighting dog". I'm not sure if there are any in Europe (though anyone can say they have a Bandog, as long as they have some sort of a Mastiff mix), it's mostly an American invention. I did however saw a couple of guys selling Bandog puppies here in continental Europe...... if you ask me, they were just trying to make money by selling mix breeds.

Actually the name< "Bandog" was first used in England by the Saxons. It comes from the word "Banda", which means, "chain." In many cases, the Saxons left the dog on a leash during the day and released it at night so that it could perform its guarding duties.>

Its not a mix of breeds its a specific cross of Neo Mastif and APBT.
Just the same as a staff x APBT is not an ISBT

How can it be only a  " Neo Mastif and APBT " cross when Bandogs have been around since the Middle Ages long before there were APBT ?

There are Bandogs mentioned throughout English history especially in the records of castles & manorial records

edited to add the new bandogs from the USA are also known as"American bandogge"

I am not disputing this with you. What I am saying is in the year 2005 and at least since the year 2000. It is now recognised in the circles that these dogs are in a bandog is a neo x apbt. Now as to how they arrived at this I dont know but that is what is accepted in the dangerous dog world as a bandog.

I am not saying it has anything to do with history. Just the same as the bulldog is nothing like the first bulldogs. Should they not be called bulldogs then
