My dog seems to have a 'thing' about chewing nettles  i don't know where he gets them from but he sits and chews on them till i see that hes got one and take it off him

dont they hurt his mouth ??

Obviously not.........

Nettles are very wholesome and healthy for dogs to eat.

wow :o didn't know that, thanks!

My pup seems to like eating nettles too, but the older dogs don't touch them ;) Maybe they've learnt something that she hasn't :)

The very new shoots dont have the sting, and are a very good "cleanser" for the stomach.

Try making nettle soup... it's meant to be nice :D

my dog comes up in bumps when she runs through the nettles and looks like she has cellulite on her bum because it is so lumpy!  this doesn't seem to bother her though and she never seems to suffer any discomfort from it.

Nettle soup is lovely - but a bit painful to make :D

how on earth do you make nettle soup anyway?! ;-)
- By Polly [gb] Date 19.08.05 09:07 UTC
Only use the young new tips for soup, the older leaves I am informed can have dire consequences, resulting in a day locked in the smallest room in the house! :-D

1/2  a carrier bag of nettles (don't use stalks - they are as tough as old rope!! Never noticed any ill-effects though Polly)
1 carrot
1 potato
1 onion
1 clove garlic
2 sticks celery
2pts stock
nutmeg
Parsley
Chuck it in a saucepan, cook till, um cooked! Blend it, if desired. Add cream.
OMG. Me, giving a recipe!!!! Move over Nigella.

But is it any good??? :D
- By Anwen [gb] Date 19.08.05 20:50 UTC
Surprisingly - yes (even when I make it). We first had it at our local when we went for a meal & liked it so much I made it, served it to guests & told them to guess what it was - they couldn't, but they must have liked it because it all went (and they're not the sort of guests to eat out of politeness either!) :D
