The most important things to consider are :
Health checks - both parents hip scores better than (or at least close to) the breed average. Current clear eye certificates. Preferably elbow scored as well.

If you're looking for a working dog or show dog then then make sure the parents and their ancestors have a proven track record of good performance in these areas (either field trial or show wins). There are some nice 'pet-bred' litters occasionally but please ensure that no compromises have been made on health screening of both the parents and their ancestors. You also need to be confident that the parents both act like and look like labradors. The best litters are usually bred by people that are really breeding for a purpose (show, working or a combination) They will still make good pets, and the breeders will be striving to produce the best possible stock. Some pure field trial stock can be a bit of a handful, so try and pick a 'type' to suit your requirements.

Temperament should be the absolute cornerstone of the breed. Try and make absolutely sure that the breeders put this as a very high priority.

Avoid puppy farms, and large multi-breed establishments, although some working kennels may also have spaniels and other retrievers.

If you concentrate on all of these factors you should find that the price takes care of itself. The range you've quoted is on the low side, for a KC reg pup. Probably £350-600 would be a rough guide. Geography makes a difference, bitches are often more expensive than dogs. Some breeders will also charge a premium for chocolates, but beware as these will often have inferior breeding to other cheaper litters which are just black and yellow.
