Hello
all my babies are doing fine, i have just started weaning and they are doing really well, my question is how many times a day should I be offering food as they are right little guzzlers ! also when should i put a bowl of water down for them ?? they are still feeding loads from mum! and i am worried about them drowning in water as they can be unsteady on their feet !!
ta sorry if this is a really stupid question !!!!

hi Chloedog, its not a silly question its a very sensible one. I put water in with my pups from two weeks of age and they very soon learn to lap it. I use a heavyweight china dog bowl with just a little bit of water in. They tend to balance themselves by putting a foot in the bowl. and touch wood!!! I have not had a puppy drown yet.
As for the number of feeds, three weeks old they are having four little meals offered to them each day. As mine is a giant breed, Im sure other posters with normal size dogs may do things differently. Im really please that all the pups are doing well, keep up the good work ;)

HI, if the puppies are eating lots of solid food quite quickly keep an eye on the mum for over production of milk. Just pass your hand underneath her a few times a day and if her breasts are full and noticeably warm, I would let them empty her before their next meal. Mine aren't usually interested in water til they are 3 -31/2 weeks old, though they do have access to it, but Westies are slow to come on compared to other larger breeds.

Hi chloedog ,
Glad to hear all is going well , I remember the day they were borne, Mine were a few hours before , I have also started the pups on solid( well mush ) and they too love it , I am feeding twice a day at the moment and they still feed from Mica afterwards . I intend to up this to three times from today as they are 4wks today. Regarding water I was also afraid to leave them with water so have just offered them water when I am with them.
Best Wishes
Paul

Oh how nice for you both to have puppies at the same time- you can compare notes kind of;) Best of luck to both you and your litters:) What breeds have you both got? Litter sizes etc, ratio of dogs v bitches? How are you both going on with the new homes for them? Are any of you keeping a pup?
