I have never seen a shorthaired Border Collie.  Is there such a dog and if so is there a picture of one I could see?

You can get a short haired Border Collie, they are usually from farm working stock. 

No Border Collies can ahve two coat types.

Coat: Two Varieties 1.) Moderately Long 2.) Smooth.  On both topcoat dense and medium textured, undercoat soft and dense giving good weather resistance.  In the moderately long coated variety, abundant coat forms mane, breeching and brush. On face, ears, forelegs (except for feather), hindlegs from hock to ground, hair should be short and smooth.

I know of several people that have them in agility but I couldn't actually find a picture on the net!! I think they are usually working bred as the preference in the show ring seems to be for more coat. I personally prefer the medium coated ones. :-)

LOLOL I now love smooth coated BCs having just been given a smooth coated puppy ;)

Incidently they are more popular now with shepherds as smooth coats seem better adapted to working in wet/muddy/snowy weather.

They equally correct however stand little chance in the breed ring as they are less flashy & of course have no coat to hide faults so have to be better dogs than the rough coated type(especially as many rough coats have more coat than some rough collies). I have a local BC"expert"ask me why I have a X breed puppy instead of a BC

In both cases just as acceptable in the breed standard.  I do think soem of the Border Collie4s I see in the ring have too much coat, it does after all call for a Medium length coat not a long coat :D

Trouble with Fashion re colour or coat in breeds where more than one is corect is that yu can loose the unfashionalbe traits that are part of the breed.  There is a lot to be said for judging coloured dogs as if they were all black, with them into the sun, so that prejudice re markings or colour does not cloud the judgement.

Those in the ring do have a medium length coat, but there is a tendency, particularly in the New Zealand lines to have a very heavy coat, as in too much coat.  The featherings are usually longer too, especially in the dogs.

Some judges do appear to be colour blind to only black and whites, unfortunately the there are not too many 'other colours' that are good examples of the breed.

It was refreshing at Bournemouth to see Tri's and even a Merle win classes. A very nice merle it was too.

LOL I am colour prejudiced but only in my personal dogs :) .I have put up Red Merles, Tri's,Red Tri's etc when I have judged. Never judged a smooth yet

If Roy & I ever make it into the breed ring it will be interesting as no matter what his conformation is like, the truth is he can do the job he & all BC's should be bred to do, unlike some of the breed dogs !(please note I said some)

Your getting better MM :D I've owned Bc's for more years than I care to remember but my first Black and White is only 3 years old :D Must admit still gonna take me sometime to get used to the Aussie reds though LOL

LOLOL Ah but the Reds I have put up have been all English breeding & the red merle was an ISDS reg/bred bitch from ISDS only reg parents! For some reason no one enters any Aussie/NZ dogs when I judge(breed that is!)

Not keen on the Aussie reds personally but then I am not a big fan of lilac or blue either, they just seem like a washed out version of the real thing. I don't like the Australian or New Zealand dogs, too much bone and coat for me and they have such short legs and they seem to be getting smaller :-(

Evas English lines and i've been told because of that she wont be as flashy so might not do so well but im going to give her a try, i do prefur engish lines and smooth coats are certainly good for mucky weather. Evas moderately long.

I've got a shorthaired BC, and so has my friend, but no one ever believes that they are not crosses. I think it makes them more streamlined in a way, she isn't hindered by her coat when shes running agility or flyball, and doesn't get as hot so its a bonus. (and she drys quickly when shes wet. ) However i do still like the longer coated BC's too!
