my neighbour has just had a go at me about my dog barking in the night. My dog is silent during the day but sometimes at night when he hears something in the garden he has a quick rousing 5 second series of barks then settles down again. it is annoying i agree , is there any way i can stop him or is that unreasonable since he is doing what comes naturally? my neighbour made a thinly veiled threat which has really unsettled me. thanks for listening!!!

Totally agree!   they wouldn't be complaining if they knew how many times your dog was possibly saving their house from being burgled(sp?)  yes it would probably get anoying but i'd like the added security :)

they have been burgled twice in the past before we got a dog!, my neighbour wasnt interested in my comments only annoyed that his sleep was disturbed. He seems to think he is the only being on this planet! question is, do I ignore him? can he take it further?

I have a similar neighbour at the bottom of my garden, it is one reason that I ahve the Graden fenced off so that the dogs don't go in that part of the garden. 

As you say occasionally one of the dogs will ehar a strange noise at night and let out a bark or two.  He stopped me the other day and said Oh those are the ones who bark as soon as it is light.  Bit of a cheek as next doors Terriers howl first thing, and the dogs don't utter a peep until they hear someone flush the loo in the morning.

Years ago he said the same, but at that time I woke the dogs up to take them for a walk with my friends dogs at 5 and 6am (they hadn't a chance to bark), and they weren't back in the house until 7.30 to 8am, and would only bark at the postman when he came.

I got worried and asked the two men that adjoin my hose how often the dogs barked and they dais no more than they would expect if there was a visitor, and not at all while I was out, much to my releif.

I rang our Environmental Health for advice and they said he woudl have to keep a diary of times and durations of barking for at least 3 weeks if he complained.  I wrote hiom a note to this effect with the address of who to contact.  Never heard anything.

Now at the start of the year my old giorls had been waking and obviously winging too quietly to wake me and I found that she had messed in ehr kennel, so I brought her inbto the kitchen, and she does wake me whining about 5am.  My Jozi also gies stacato hurry up barks once she hears someone up in the morning.

Interestingly enough none of them bark once put to bed if my teenager daughter rolls in late after a night out, or when her boyfreind leaves for work in the morning, only if they hear me get up.

It depends I suppose on how often is not that often ? :) If it is only a few barks then it really should not wake them up I would have thought ? Is he continues to bark without settling down then yes I would say they had a case if it was on a regular basis.

My youngest Dudley is one for nightime barking sometimes (once in a blue moon :) ) as she was last night at 2am ! :rolleyes: :D

She does it however if she hears a noise or sees something. We are very lucky as it is not that often and settles down after she has been visited by the OH to see if all is well and to tell her to stop being a silly puppy and go back to sleep :)

We also have very tolerant and nice neighbours which does help :)

My dogs had a real barking session around 1am last summer, neighbours complained, I did quieten them, but it was about 5-10 minutes (which is a long time for them, they normally settle quicker).......next morning my neighbours garden furniture had been stole from their garden!!  :-)  Sorry I know I shouldn't smile, but most dogs bark for a reason.

Do you keep your dogs in the garden at night or inside? Because if they are inside I can't understand why that would bother them. Mine never barks at night, but even during the day if she barks inside nobody apart from us would hear her.

My Barnie used to look out the window and bark when anyone went past the house being a collie x GSD, he was doing what came naturally and that was protecting the house. My neighbours never complained and actually felt a little safer. I have never been burgled and neither were my neighbours and I was the only one with a dog.

My rottie barks when she is playing, but more so with one toy than any others (she growls at the others) and after about 9pm, we take this one toy away so she won't bark, but then she is only a puppy and this is what's expected.

my dog is in the house at night. he never barks during the day even if people come to the door. I have had a chance to think this through now and have decided to try and ignore the neighbour. the barking is perhaps once a night and not everynight. it is a quick volley of barks and then settling down again, he hasnt barked for 3 nights.  my neighbour is just a moaner and a light sleeper. i decided to try and ignore it and then today a friend says "what if he tries to poison your dog?" !!!!!
