i know i probably sound a bit thick but somebody told me that you can take dogs on public transport is this true?, if so are there any rules or do you have to pay and how long has it been going on?
You can take a dog on the buses but its up to the driver whether they will allow them on,they usually do make a small charge but it depends on the bus company so always check before setting off.
I think its the same for trains, but always check.

Yes you can take dogs on public transport, I take my puppies on the bus and train the first week I get them home..............
When they are that small, they are so cute I generally never get charged ;)
I think it costs about 50p to take a dog on a bus, don't think it matters where to either, the cost is still the same.
I had to go to London once on the train with one of my Spanish. All that I can say that it was hard work finding a seat where passengers would allow me to sit near them. I felt like I had a person with a "mass murderer" sign on them. I would never do it again! I've never tried a bus and it took me 4 taxi drivers before one would allow me in their cab.

I took my Cavalier on a train from Preston into London and then through the tube system out to Edmonton, then on a bus home. He didn't get charged at all - the conductor on the intercity train said he was too cute! Am doing a journey from the Lakes to Watford next Tuesday with my Cav puppy, which should be interesting as she's a lot more fidgeting than the older boy! I think most trains allow 2 dogs per person (if only I had Great Danes to try this rule!)
I took Ron on the train nightmare! Didnt have to pay but he tired to lick everyone in sight

Yes, dogs are allowed on public transport. I've taken dogs on trains (in the 50s they had to travel in the guard's van with a muzzle, but that was outmoded by the mid-60s), on buses, on the Underground, in taxis ... it's getting more difficult nowadays as society is becoming so much more anti-dog. I'd expect to pay a child's fare.
I have to say that I didn't have to pay any extra for my girl though :d

When I do travel by tube, I often reflect on the impossibility of doing it with a lab - or any dog which is too big to carry, come to that. When we had cavaliers, they went on numerous steam trains, a rowing boat on the river Wye, a rowing boat at sea, a horse-drawn carriage at Llandudno, and a cable car at Matlock Bath. A major advantage of smaller dogs....

No problems with the buses in Cumbria, being walking territory, there are often dogs on and people don't seem to bat an eye and no charge. Have taken mine on the train too. I take a bit of vet bed to encourage them to settle down and the biggest problem is detering fellas travelling down from Glasgow who have been breakfasting in the bar from sharing their food with them :D. Taxis are a problem though. They are not obliged to take dogs and I find very few are willing. Can't say I blame them as obviously hairs are a bigger problem in the confined space and people do seem to let them jump on the seats as they are climbing in, it has even made our local paper when one or two have refused a Guide Dog which I believe they are not allowed to do.

As one who has no option but to rely on public transport or good old shanks pony yes thankfully dogs are still allowed on a lot of public transport. Sadly National Express (last time I enquired) no longer did using the excuse that they serve food.
You can take two dogs per person on British Rail Free of charge. Having tried this method of going to shows I would not recomend it if you want to ge there on time :D
Buses tend to vary greatly and there is an active thread about this. Last time I took mine on our Bristol buses you didn't pay for the dog, but it was at drivers discretion if you were caried, but in other towns I ahve been charged a Child or flat fare for carrying a dog.
