Going to see our pup in a few days.

Mum and Dad have been hip tested and have "clear eyes". Is there any other tests which can be done to detect possible glaucoma in Mum, Dad or pups??

Thanks

What breed and eye conditions are we tsalking about.  Sadly very few eye conditions can have a clear result, as most are inherited as recessives.

The eye test can tell you if a parent is affected or unaffected.  For conditions that are late onset a dog may be unaffected and a year or so later could still end up affected.

The only way to tell carriers is in the very few condiitons for which a DNA test is available, and even then they are not a 100% if they are a marker test as opposed to the actual gene.

When they've said "clear eyes" is this specifically for the glaucoma or for the other eye tests?

The glaucoma test is done in a different way to the other eye tests so you need to ensure that it is for the glaucoma test and not the other eye problems, if it is a breed that suffers with this.

Good luck with your new pup

I have just been told by the breeder over the phone that both Dam and Sire have clear eyes and that the pups look good too.

I was wondering what I should have expected the breeder to have had the pups tested for?

That all depends on the breed.

It depends on the breed.

If it is a collie breed, then unless both parents have been DNA tested as normal then the breeder cannot say the pups are clear.  If she has eye checked the pups at the correct age, she can say they are unaffected, they could still be carriers.

Also worth mentioning that parents should have current clear certificates (depending on breed & eye condition). Many conditions require annual testing as the age of onset is unknown or variable.

You've mentioned glaucoma this can only be tested for by a specialist, looking at the eyes unless they have glaucoma will not show whether they have a predisposition to it.

You need to find out what eye tests they've had done.  Also you need to find out the dogs hip scores before going and buying this puppy.

Can you tell us what breed, the parents hip scores and which eye tests?  Certain breeds have specific eye problems so with all of the above we will be able to advise you better :d

Edited:-  Realised from your other posts that it's a flatcoat that you are getting.
