hi my bitch has just given birth to ten pups so far and at the moment shes not feeding them.we have tried to place them on her nipple to feed but she keeps moving away as we dont have any puppy milk formula what could i give them to tie them over till i get some.

When you say "just given birth" are we talking minutes, hours, or a day or two?  And, not meaning to be rude, but why on earth have you no emergency supplies like nutrodrops or colostrum never mind whelpi?

Edited to add:  why are you not gently restraining the bitch in a lying down position and physically keeping her with them until they have suckled?

You really need two people to do this, someone needs to be at the end of her head stroking her and reassuring her while the other one puts the pups on, if you have no whelpi then you can use carnation [diluted].

Good point Melissa - two bodies are pretty much essential if the bitch is distressed at all. 

OP, Re the Carnation Milk if you don't have any of that in stock either, I suggest someone goes to the nearest 24 hour supermarket or overnight Petrol station shop to buy some RIGHT NOW.  It should of course be ever so slightly warmed - personally I don't dilute it so perhaps Melissa can expand on that, i.e. by how many parts of CM to water?

I only say dilute Teri because that's what i've been used to BUT i dilute with liquid life-aid which IMHO is essentail for anyone who is due a ltter, i was on the verge of loosing a whole litter after loosing one, the rest i tube fed liquid life - aid and all six survived. I'm sure it's o.k undiluted especially if it's worked for others. I'd agree with Teri go to a 24 hour supermarket and stock up but don't give up trying with mum some are just slower to accept pups than others and if she isn't growling at them i can't see that this is going to be a problem. In my breed [bulldogs] where we have c-sections when the bitch comes round we always make sure there are two of us until we know mum has accepted the puppies.

With regards to the diluting. We gradually build up so in the end we are 50/50 with the life aid. But i think you hould go with Teri on this one and not dilute, the most important thing is that the puppies are fed and kept warm.

lesson number one in whelping - always be prepared. A substitute milk is a vital item to have - you never know what might happen when whelping.  :)

Have you tried calling your vet to see if they may have whelpie etc in stock.  Our vet brought some over for us the day after pepsi had puppies.  Just a thought.
