Does anyone know if this is available anywhere apart from vets. It is used for an arthritic GSD but its costing about 45 quid every month. Yesterday I asked my vet how much he charged for Panacur 10%.....20.06 and I get it for 12.10 from C.Chemists. This got me to thinking if this metacam is cheaper elsewhere.

Hi
There are dog pharmacies advertised in the dog world newspaper sometimes, metacam is a prescription drug, but you vet should give you a prescription for it then you could get it from them. I think it's about £34.00 in the last advert I saw.

I can see what you are getting at Dawn, but it sounds like a sure-fire way to fall out with your vet!!!!

A friend of mine now does this with her syloxine (sp) tablets, the vet wasn't happy about having to give a prescription, but couldn't refuse. she has two dogs on permanent medication, and it is now excluded on her Insurance on renewal since DBI changed hands!

Hi Sam
Don't think my vet would have a problem with it, don't know whether I'd ask him though !!

Get a prescription from your vet and get the medication from canine chemist. I am now doing this with my dogs incontinence medication and it is much cheaper. If it is a long term medication I can't see that a vet would object.
I recently brought stuff from canine chemist for upset stomachs which cost me 5.95, from the vet it would have cost 13.85 and that's not prescription medicine!!!!!!!!!

to get a prescription from my vet cost £7.50,metacam is cheaper in southern ireland, have i look at vet in ireland on the net,

Yep Metacam over here in Ireland costs us about 15 Euro for the average sized bottle (about a months dosage for a gsd), which converts to just over 10 sterling

Just out of curiosity have you looked at other treatments such as glucosamine? I ask as I have an 9 yo rottie x who needs arthritis help and after reading a lot on various boards and talking to my vet, we are taking the glucosamine option

HTH and good luck

Metacam is carcagenic so has long term effects, we had a bitch on it for 2 years, it helped her alot but our vet insisted on a three month checks which cost an extra £12.00 on top of the £35.00 cost, which lasted about 6 weeks - she was worth it though
