hi i'm new, wondering if anyone can help solve a dilema. i have a five month old klee kai ( yes i know i'm lucky ) i've taken her to the vets for constant scratching but they can find nothing shes up to date with frontline and other things. her diet is scrambled egg for breakfast, gluten free biscuits during the day and chicken breast for dinner. During training ( clicker ) she is given cheese as her reward. If anyone has any ideas i would be grateful, and im sure the dog would be to.
many thx vikkie

She could be allergic to the cheese. :( I'm afraid it may be a case of trial and error. Put her on a very bland diet, usually chicken and rice, and then gradually add things to see if anything happens. Though some dogs are allergic to rice there are that many that are. Could you go back to the breeder and see if there is anything that the breed is known to be allergic to? Or any of the pups relatives? It may help.

Just having a quick look at a number of sites, for some reason they don't seem to state what breeds were in the original cross.  They do look a nice dog.  Sorry but I can't help you much regarding the itching.  Do you have bedding etc?  If so what do you wash it in?

Consider also what you use around the house, carpet cleaner and fresheners, air fresheners, powders and conditioners used to wash her bedding etc. as many of these things are not very dog friendly.

Hi Vikkie,

"her diet is scrambled egg for breakfast, gluten free biscuits during the day and chicken breast for dinner."

I don't know what you what type of biscuits you're feeding - people biscuits, dog biscuits or something else entirely.  However, the diet does not sound at all balanced to me from a nutritional standpoint and could well account for the excessive itching.

I would slowly replace what you are feeding now with the very best quality dog food you can find - one with no additives, artificial preservatives, etc.   I'm assuming you want to continue to feed "people food" - mixing egg or chicken breast with dog food is fine.

If you want to continue to make your own food for your dog there are a number of books on BARF and also books which give recipes for cooked food.

Hi Vikkie,
We have the same problem with our puppy. We found that washing all his bedding towels etc in non bio washing powder- no fabric conditioner is a must. He is on burns food which is a dry mix home cooked based diet with no additives colouring or preservativess, mixed with a little tuna, chicken or sardine. He loves it. The other thing is I washed my kitchen floor ( He sleeps in the kitchen at night )with flash liquid the other day, the next day his poor little tummy was red raw and he was biting and scratching excessively. I now wash the floor using non bio washing powder and rinse well. Antihistamines such as the non drowsy type also works well the calm down the symptoms. You would be best to check with your vets surgery on the dosage reccomended. We are still battling with the symptoms but it is getting better. We avoided the steriod injections as we are keen to find the cause of the irritaion not just aleviate the symptoms unecessarily. Hope your puppy get better soon.

this may not be relevant but my pup itches when his anal glands are blocked, this usually happens if he has has the runs. After the vet squeezes them he is fine.
