hi all, my girl is on day 46 from first mating and i wanted to know what others do about worming, she was wormed when she came in to season. on other litters i have had i have always then left it until the pups are 2 weeks old and then done them and mum again and then every 2 weeks until the pups leave, but i have read here (i think it was on here) that some worm there bitches at about day 40 and then again just before the bitch whelps then 2 weeks and so on.
i have never had a big problem with worms but i would like to hear what other breeders do. and if you do worm while the bitch is in whelp what do you use and where do you get it from?

Hi Natalie,
There are different opinions and no doubt sound reasons for each individual having formed their opinion ;) FWIW I wormed my bitch roughly a couple of weeks before mating and not again until the pups were due their first dose (similar to your own previous routine :) ) I followed this advice because it is what an experienced breeder/mentor and good friend of mine advised so I have no other experience to proffer but can say I was happy with that and both mum and pups were very healthy and problem free on that regime. Mum was wormed with Drontal Plus tabs and pups fortnightly with Drontal Liquid Puppy.
Regards, Teri :)

I worm bitch when 4weeks pregnant and again day after puppies are born ,I use DRONTAL PLUS puppies get wormed 2 weekly with drotal liquid.

I heard never to worm a lactating bitch? my pups are being wormed 2 weekly with drontal suspension but i was leaving mum untill they were weaned. She was wormed before season, i didnt bother with the daily worming from day 40 of pregnancy because i knew i could never get liquid down her neck on a daily basis. pills are ok because they hide in food but it has to be liquid-apparently.

No, bitches should be wormed at the same time as the puppies, because lactation stimulates the larvae to migrate - you need to rid her of them (as well as the ones she's re-infected herself with cleaning up after the pups) as well as the pups.

I never worm a pregnant bitch, I worm before mating and after puppies born.
