oh my days !!! this week goes from bad to worse !! just heard a commotion outside , yapping & howling ! i ran out & 3 of my darling dachsie girls were ragging what looked like one of their toys,my 2 youngest were howling under the bench !! then i noticed the guinea pig cage door open............................ it wasnt a toy they were ragging !! my OH loves his piggies like i love my dogs , golly, if thats what the beagles do to the fox in fox hunting ...........

Beagles hunt hares, not foxes. When one of my dogs caught one of my piggies, the piggie died instantly (shock, as much as anything). Whathappens afterwards doesn't affect it at all. Upsetting, though.
sorry , i thought they were the breed used in the hunt!! what is the breed used??

It depends what you're hunting! Foxhounds hunt foxes, beagles, harriers and bassets hunt hares, otterhounds now hunt mink, dachshunds were badger-hunters, great danes were used for hunting boar, borzois are Russian wolfhounds ... the list goes on!

Kill Guinea pigs ??
NO ! i mean tear it apart , it was horrible , really horrible, they wouldnt stop!

It does look nasty - but the piggie won't have felt anything of it, any more than their dinner feels pain.

They would have probably killed it very quickly and efficiently as their instinct and inherent breed characteristics would dictate.
The fact that they played with or tore the corpse apart is neither here nor there. After all bit hard to share the dinner (as that is what it is to them) without doing this.
Daccsies basically fulfill the role in Europe that our terrie5rs do in the UK, developed on partallell lines as dogs designed to go after prey that lives in earths or holes in the ground.
Lovely as they are to a dog a Piggie is just a Rat.

I *think* you will find that Daschunds were used for badgers originally not foxes ...or guinea pigs

OH was gutted & he,s not talking to " my horrible sausages , who will be on the next barbeque!!! " we had a little funeral for Dougal (piggy) & other piggie has been moved to front garden !! its a big reminder that my cute babies are animals & i shouldnt forget that !!!!
its sad you do forget wat there capible of expecially wen they look at you with those big sad brown eyes they look so inecent . :)
i could never imagin meg doing anything like that but im sure she would if she could its instinct!
sorry about the gpig im sure your husband will cme around and forgive you! :) chin up,it wasnt your fault misstyko! x
hi all !! just thought id let you all know that DOUGAL, the piggie killed by my dachsies , has left a parting gift !!! dougal was supposed to be a girl, however, when my OH went to the cage to feed his now "lonely" piggie , thers were 3 babies running around the cage !!!! OH is chuffed to bits !!! lol caron
So sad about Dougal if you have got a little boy guinea pig maybe he could be Dougal (2) bet you were happy about the little piggies.(3)

You do need to remeber to seperate the baby piggies by the timne they are six weeks old as they are able to reproduce very young and it is't good for them. Any boys are likely to mate with their Mum and sisters, and it is likely that your deceased piggie was teh Mums littermate or close relative already.

Oh dear sorry about the guinea pig. Must have been a nasty sight! Glad your OH has new babies to keep him occupied though! :-)
we bought a book on guinea pigs today , your right, we need to seperate them at 6 weeks , will keep 1 & already have homes for the other 2 !! our pigs not related as bought 18 months apart. one from leeds & other from darlington. we will get mum " done" to ensure no more babies.!!! OH is well chuffed !!! and he started talking to my dachsie girls again today !! so all is well ......for the time been !!!
lol caron
PS all the piggies seem to be called DOUGAL !!!! lol
CARON

That is good as a lot of piggies are very inbred when they get left together too long and are purchsed at Pet shops as same sex and reproduce to their litter mates and then their parents and so on.
A friend got a bit of a shock when she had some born without eyes.
