Please could anyone tell me if there is the faintest chance that our neighbours dog could have got ours pregs.... he, how can I put this delicately ?!! he was doing his business once we caught him and shouted he jumped off and stood very still for a while... well until his "parts" returned to normal... we looked and something was dripping from him ? Our "Babes" is in her third week of her season !!!  someone has said that there is a morning after pill for dogs ? is this true ? thanks anyone who can tell us if we should be worried...

If he had penetrated the bitch even without a tie then she could have been inpregnated.  There is an injection the Vet can give to prtevent pregnancy.  The timing is important so contact the vet straight away.

Excuse me .. but what is "tie" ? Can I find anything out about the "timing" too ? I will go straight round to the vets tommorrow, thanks... We aren't sure if this has happened this last week.. we have been away.. and had house sitters... and they did not notice that he had dug through to get to ours !!!! thanks for help...

Tieing is what generally happens with canine copulation.

The male has a bulbous gland at the top of his member that swells within the bitch and this causes him to remain tied within the bitch for anything from a few minutes to half an hour or so.  t

Te dog will usually also turn (lifting his hindleg over the bitches back so stand back to back).

This is not needed in order for the bitch to become pregnant as ejaculation of the semen usually occurs within the first minute of entering the bitch.

As for timing bitches vary as to when in their season they ovulate, some as early as the first few days ans some very late or even when most bitches would ahve finished, so it is alwqays wise to keep bitches seperated from males for longer than 21 days.

Also a bitch should be watched even in your own garden as you have found out.  If the male dug his way in chances are he caught her at the optimum time.

If she is to be spayed it is usually best to have it done half way between seasons, but your vet may decide she is fit to be spayed just in case she is pregnant.  He may altrernatively give an injection (some can bring the bitch back iinto season, so even more care needs to be taken) and then opt to spay her later.
