german shepherd or doberman
this any different between male or female

To be honest guest no dog should be used for protection.  Buying a dog for that will only cause trouble.

If it is for reassurance around the house a dog of any size that will let out a bark does the trick I think

If you want some protection, how about buying a burgler alarm and taking lessons in Karate?  :D
