Topic Dog Boards / Health / Diluting Hibiscrub

Millie has a hot spot as discovered by the groomers on Monday (just as well she had an appointment, we thought all the sticky stuff was where she'd rolled in something and had bathed her and it could have gone undetected in long jet black fur for quite a while!)

I've got some Hibiscrub and I remember the groomers saying about diluting and I think she said 10-15ml in a spray bottle of water.

As I don't have a spray bottle, I've taken an empty (500ml) water bottle, put an approximately of 15ml Hibi in the bottom and topped it up with water.

OH thinks this is too weak though.  I know (from a search) that some people on here use Hibiscrub neat on hot spots but the general consensus seems to be you should dilute it which I would prefer to do as I don't want to sting or irritate it further (I was using salt water as recommended by groomers until I could get the Hibi and Millie was freaking out, whereas she will happily tolerate me dabbing the diluted Hibiscrub)  but I just wondered how much diluting is the norm - if I should make up a new solution with less water?

Tips gratefully received!

Ha ha, I say 'happily tolerate' me using diluted Hibiscrub, I think that should really read "just about tolerate, under extreme protest!" :-D

I part hibiscrub to 10 parts water, apply with cotton woold ball (it will lather) and then rinse off with cooled boiled water.  Have just used it on my old girl, who used to get hot spots most years until I started usign Frontline.  Forgot the Spring Frontline this year and used the Spot on in May, but I don't think it is as effective as the spray as up came two Hot spots in July, and I then find I get some more once they heal.

Thanks Brainless - I had been dabbing with cotton wool but not rinsing off with the boiled water - but then my solution would work out at something like 1 part Hibiscrub to 33 parts water on that scale ha ha so I can be forgiven!

I will go and make up some more, thanks for that! ;-)

I'm not sure what a hot spot is but I always keep Hibiscrub in the cupboard.  For those of you who want to buy it, I have to order it in (on next day delivery) from my local pharmacy and it costs about £2.99 for 500ml.

I find it excellent for treating sore bits, and it took me ages to cotton on to the fact the vet would often only give me Hibiscrub and charge a fortune.  I think it does say use on unbroken skin somewhere but it doesn't seem to cause any ill effects when diluted well.  Of course it may just be the washing that does the trick!
