We have put a deposit down on a pup, and after searching around, I am having second thoughts on the breeder.
As I walked out of the door, I heard one of their children say we can go to Disney now. The breeder told her to shut up!
The breeder was really nice, and very friendly. But what one of her children says keeps going round and round in my head. The fact they have breed their bitch and selling all pups, for a trip to Disney.
I have put a £100 deposit down, but I am really having second thoughts.
What do you all think? Should I go with my feeling?? Will I get my deposit back??
Thanks
You may not know in passing what was said, my daughter will say things that i find cringe worthy or the parents could of said when the pups are sold WE WILL SEE ABOUT GOING TO DISNEY LAND, and to a child that is like saying YES WE ARE GOING YIPPPPEEEEEE, and really it is up to the breeder what she does with her money,
if the pups have come from health tested parents and are brought up correctly and look healthy is it a problem?
with my last litter of pups over 15 years ago we bought a second hand van that was needed,
my friends last litter paid partly for her to see her son in Australia and the grand children she had never seen for over 7 years,
If on the other hand you where not impressed with the litter and you felt pressurised into putting a deposit down, i am really not sure what you can do about that.

I wouldn't worry about what they are going to spend the money on, but I would worry about their knowledge and experience in producing this litter. Are they planning to keep one to show or work or have they just produced pet puppies to sell? Have they had all the necessary health checks done on the Dam? Have they used their own stud dog for convenience or have they travelled to use the most suitable dog for their bitch?

It is my understanding that deposits are non-refundable, otherwise what is the point in putting one down in the first place?
You should really go with your gut feeling on this one. You were obviously satisfied enough with the breeder and the quality of the pups before you heard this comment. If the breeder is lucky enough to have ethically and responsibly bred a litter and make a profit, then what she chooses to spend that money on is really up to her.
However, if you feel that the litter was bred purely to fund a holiday to Disney, then (IMO) buying a pup from her will only encourage her to irresponsibly breed again in the future. In these circumstances, I would be inclined to forfit my deposit and keep looking for the right pup.
Entirely up to you, of course. It would be great if you could join the site and let us know what you decide.
I'm not half as knowledgable as most of the posters here when it comes to breeding but I thought this might help you decide. We got our puppy a year ago from a family who were new to breeding. They had mated their 2yo whippet bitch and although they were hoping that some of the pups would race, their primary concern was that they would be looked after. I hadn't given it a second thought until I read your post, but I remember that I was so desperately in love with a picture on a website of a 2 day old pup, that I offered to pay the full asking price rather than a deposit (which in hindsight was really stupid, could have gone very wrong). Anyway, I offered to transfer the money (300 quid, whippets are fairly cheap!) directly into the chap's account but he said he'd far rather a cheque as they were going to put it into their savings account towards a holiday. I didn't have any issue with this, and from what you've said, it sounds like a similar situation. They had a litter of five, one of which they ended up keeping, so the pups raised $1200 (sorry no pound sign!). Obviously whippets are cheaper than a lot of breeds as the parents aren't required to undergo any testing, but even taking that into consideration, I cannot imagine that my pup's family would have made a profit of more than a couple of hundred pounds.
I assumed that their outgoings during the pregnancy were paid in bits and pieces, and that they simply found it easier to save if the cash went directly into their savings account (I can relate only too well :-) ).
A year on we have a perfectly healthy, naughty, gorgeous dog who we wouldn't change for the world. And after seeing the breeder after eight weeks with five tiny whippets, I think he probably needed the holiday.
