hello,
we have a 22 month old staffy bitch, who is a fantastic dog and have never had any problems with her health wise, but yesterday evening she had like a fit one min she was fine next min she was on the floor shaking and foaming at the mouth, she was out of it for about 2 mins but when she came round she was very nasty to us barking and growling but then within 5 mins she snapped out of it, this morning we took her to the vets who checked her out and said she was fine and said just watch her and if it happens again then she will do a blood test,the thing is it was very scary watching our dog go thru this, does this sound like a fit, and what can we do if it does happen again which we hope it dosnt, can anyone give us any advice please.

Hi Jayj,
My last Staffy had epilepsy.  Just keep a close eye on your dog and record in a diary when she fits and what your dog was doing beforehand.  The "funny" behaviour for a little while after the fit is normal.  They feel very disorientated and unsure after a fit.  Best thing is to keep them nice and quiet with no noise, bright lights, telly on etc. until they come back round properly.
It could be a one off (this can happen).

hi sarah, thanks for the reply, i hope it is a one off as i have never seen this in a animal before and it freaked me out, the vet says i shud keep calm if it happens again, i thought we was going to lose her as i wasnt sure what was happening to her, im worried if it happens when we are out can she bring herself round.

Hi Jay,
Yes, she'll bring herself round.  Just make sure there's nothing she can hurt herself on if you're not there.  It is very frightening the first time it happens (I also thought I was losing my bitch). With my girl, when she came round, she didn't know who we were or where she was for the first few minutes, so unless she's going to hurt herself, let her be until she comes to you.

P.S. She might lose control of her bladder and bowels too (nothing to worry about).

she didnt lose control of her bladder or bowels, she was just foaming at the mouth and shaking thats why the vet thinks it was only a mild fit, the vet said her heart mite of miss a beat and this could of trigger it.
