Hi my bitch gave birth to ten puppies on 29-8-05 sadly she was 6 days premature and 5 were still born. Since then one whice was born realy small died and the bitch laid on one and it died. Now im left with 2 dogs and a bitch, the dogs are realy thriving growing by the minute so to speak, however the bitch is not doing so well, she is still growing but at no rate like the dogs when born they were all of similar size but now the dogs are nearly twice her size. Please help is this normal?

I am so sorry for your loss, I can only advise you have Mum and pups checked over by a vet asap, It sounds like fading puppy syndrome to me, I have only seen this once before in a litter of pups a friend had and one by one the puppies began to get sickly and die for no apparent reason :-( It was very saddening to watch and my friend never bred another litter of puppies as she couldnt face the thought of it happening again :-( I truly hope I am wrong though, best get it checked out why not join and then you can come back and let us know how mum and pups get on? :-)

i do hope this is not the case! both mum and pups were checked out the day before the last one died. i was told then that they were fit and healthy

How long did you work on reviving each of the still born pups?  Is the bitch left on her own?  Has your Vet checked the bitch and the pups?

the whole experience was devistating and i can honestly say we worked on the pups for a good 10-15 minutes there was just no way they would come too. the mum and pups were seen by the vet and apparently then everything was fine. the next day i found one dead. i dont leave them alone for great amounts of time, i am trying to be there with them night and day! they are gaining weight but the girls progress is not as good as the boys

If you keep getting her on before the boys and letting her feed without having to fight (after all she's fighting two heavier pups ;) )  then she should do fine, as long as she's lively enough and gaining steadily, weigh daily and record the weights, as a bitch pup she may be smaller anyway, but once they start weaning she will catch up, just supervise feeding time so she gets what she needs.

Hope this helps
Regards
Dill

And welcome to the board :D :D

thanks for that your advice has helped. also there's something else i need advice on the pups need worming in the next couple of days the vet gave me panacur but i read that this tends to upset the stomach do you know of an alternative that wont give any tummy trouble?
- By Dill [gb] Date 11.08.05 21:22 UTC
I've never experienced stomach problems with Panacur but never used it on tiny pups,my older pups were loopy for a few days tho  so really don't know - sorry

Having had synchronised projectile vomiting after using panacur on mine  not a pretty sight, I use Drontal liquid puppy suspension until 12 weeks and move onto the Drontal tablets after that :)

Regards, Teri

And I thought the loopyness was bad!!  I didn't even give more than one dose (you know the over 3 days doses) the other doses would probably have made them much worse :(

hello

i havent experienced any probs using panacur, the first time I wormed mine was immediatly after they have fed, literally as they drop off the teat - no probs at all, I have heard people say drontal liquid is better but panacur works for me, isnt it the only wormer that kills a particular type of worm? -cant think of the name off the top of my head.
