Topic Dog Boards / General / The strange things that dogs do!

Yesterday my Dad had been busy working in the garden.  Just giving it a bit of a general tidy up.  He was still doing it when I went off to my agility class last night. When I got back I let my three out into the garden as usual and went back to the kitchen to wash my hands, when I heard my youngest barking and then growling!  I wondered what on earth he was up too.  My dogs all know that barking in the garden is a no no (don't want to upset neighbours too much!).  So I went out thinking that there must be something really strange in the garden.

But no.  My dad had moved a garden ornamental fox into a different place in the garden!  It would appear that the ornamental fox is the scariest thing on earth.  I went over to the fox and called my dog too me but he wouldn't come near me. He just stopped in collie creep stance growiling at it!  As soon as I moved my hand he ran away like a complete pansy!

Eventually after several minutes of encouragment he finally dared come near it.  He took one sniff and ran back into the house!

What a macho man!  Scared of a stone fox!  I had to laugh at him.  Poor dog.

He has since decided that the fox isn't quite so scary!

Lol sorry Slobdog its not a story of my dog doing anything daft but your tale reminded me of a friend of mine, his family have a border collie called Jack. Nothing strange there you might think, but Jack is petified of.......wait for it..............sheep. Apparently he will not walk through a field of sheep his owners have to take the long way around if where they need to go is over the other side of the field.

Our 11 year old staffie howls when the phone rings, we have to pick it up quickly. I found a toy in the shed a few days ago which I gave to the puppy. Its a little ball (tennis ball size but plastic) that makes a noise when it moves, she kicks it a little, then runs round it and barks constantly. This is the only toy that has that effect on her, she is a strange girl.

My lot howl like banshees when the phone rings and we're not there to answer it instantly! They're okay for the first two rings then they start calling us ... Not helpful if you're in the bath!

lol - Glazby has a few things he's scared of

First thing is my hairbrush - he jumped up on the bed one day and trod on it.  Its soft brissles so wouldn't have hurt him but oh my, if ever he sees it now he crouches down and gives it a good growl, if he then has an audience he'll happily jump about, land with head between paws and bum in air as he tells it exactly what he thinks of it!!  :D

Second thing he doesn't like (and I don't know why) is anyone in a hat - or with anything on their head.  I can't wear a hood, a hat or the kitchen colander on my head (don't ask)!!  ;-)  He'll growl and back away from us until we take it off.

I guess with the 2nd thing, as we got him at 18 months we don't know if he associates hats with anything that may have happened when he was a puppy.

Somthing that made me laugh last night - we had an ant in the house, until Glaz went up to investigate it with is nose and squashed it!!!!  :D

Mine are scared of the vaccum cleaner - but not scared enough to run right away, just to back away suspiciously as it comes towards them. Henry also barks whenever we turn over the calendar and there's a new dog picture on the wall. Yesterday I got one of Henry's cups down and put it on the table ready to return to the show, and Ellie started growling at it - I think she could see her reflection in it!! :-D

If I have Thai in the car she goes mental, like she wants to kill things such as.......caravans, lorry's, trailers, loud landrovers (the old ones) motorbikes and their riders - anything that doesn't quite fit in to the 'car' category - daft thing!  My Mum's leonberger used to be terrified when you walked her passed this concrete bin in the park! LOL.

Sarahg - Bali does this with squeaky toys, smacks them with his paws, throws them in the air, growls and barks at them for hours on end - crazy rotties :D  Good though because he at least keeps himself entertained LOL :)

LOL

My Lhasa would bark if you are talking on the mobile as he does know who you are taking to. :)  I guess dogs are still in the stone ages! :)

Also, we has like this sofa bed in the living room and our little dog always crawls under it and watchs TV there with us, if someone's leg is in the way of his view, he would bark at us! :)  The little silly Billy! :)  But I think sometimes he would go under there and play hide and seek as he barks really quietly as if to give us hints to where he is! :)  Bless.

Every year when the Christmas Tree goes up, my Collie will bark ferociously at it when she first sees it.  She gives it a 'look' for a few days after too.  :D
