Hi

I got a funny look off the postman the other morning when he found he merrily talking away to my dogs.  Just made me wonder what other people do.  If I'm by myself with them it's natural to me to chat away and I'm sure they listen (probably wondering when I'll shut up).  Would be interesting to know other people's thoughts.

I sing and chat away to mine all the time :d

I always say 'good morning girls' when I get up. I ask them how they are? Tell them how lovely they are, usually whispering this in their ears when I talk to them and they cuddle up to me :) I like to see their heads go from side to side as I talk to them. And as Maddies' food is on a timer (enzymes soaking) she lets me know when the timer rings (I pretend I don't hear it) and I ask her if its ready and she wags her tail and barks at me to follow her to the kitchen :D So in a way, she talks to me aswell!

When I moved here I had 2 dogs that had been born in England and one that had been born and lived in Sweden -so I spoke different languages to them. :) Even my vet learnt how to say a few phrases in Swedish to my Swedish dog, such as god dog. :D

Surely it's a weird person who doesn't talk to their dogs? :D
- By Rosemarie [gb] Date 09.08.05 13:03 UTC
I walk down the street chatting to Molly when we go for a walk.
- By hairypooch Date 09.08.05 13:40 UTC
It's been said many times before but I'm pleased that my dogs can't talk, just in case they related every secret I've got and the absolute gobbledygook that I impose on them nearly every minute of every day

Even down to asking them what they want for their breakfast and dinner. :P
- By Goldmali Date 09.08.05 14:03 UTC
Okay, taking this a step further: who talks FOR their dogs?  Beause I do, and just as much for my cats. I.e. somebody wll do something, and I will TRANSLATE to whoever happens to be near. Eg. "Simba says he's teaching the puppy a very important lesson in hole digging" or "Ripley says 'Get lost, I'm in charge' " or "Rufus says 'Come on, I haven't beed fed for YEARS and I am STARVING' " or whatever!!! :p

- By Blue Date 09.08.05 22:27 UTC
LOL so do I ..

Ha ha well Toady, I've had my pup for 2.5 weeks, adn my neighbours can now hear me chatting away to her at all hours - the worst of it must be me getting really excited and singing the following to her whilst giving her a good old 'tummy rubs'

"tummy rubs, tummy rubs, tummy rubs rubs rubs, tummy rubs, tummy rubs, tummy rubs, rubs rubs....." in a loud, high pitched very bad singing voice to some daft tune that might be the lone ranger...................

very sad, but kiera loves it and rolls over at every opportunity.........my OH thinks I've lost the plot!
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 09.08.05 14:46 UTC
:D :D How funny I sing

"Belly Rubs Belly Rubs Belly belly belly Rubs"
- By Nickyxh [gb] Date 09.08.05 14:48 UTC
Oh Thank goodness I'm not the only lunatic on here!  I was bad enough when I was just a cat owner - but being owned by a puppy is whole different ball game!!!

Now then , on a serious note, i think it's about time I progressed to those smiley face things - can you tell me how? :)

Was starting to think I was the only mad one out there.  Yes, I also speak for my dogs, ask them if they're ok etc.  Bed time sounds likes the Waltons when I say goodnight to each one in turn. They do speak to me in their own way.  Used to have a bitch who would howl everytime I came home.  Sure she was saying hello.  Another bitch, who developed diabetes, could tell the time.  She would come and paw and nudge me to say 'breakfast or dinner time' which had to always be at the same time due to her condition and she was usually spot on.  The clocks going back or forwards used to confuse her terribly though as I had to gradually change her times to fit in with the clocks.
- By Cockerhouse [gb] Date 09.08.05 15:47 UTC
Toady, my diabetic old boy tells me what time it is as well, he sits by the fridge waiting for his jab, then his eye drops and then his tablets, they'r not stupid are they.  I hold long conversations with my three in fact I get more sense out of them than I do most people!
- By colliesrus [gb] Date 09.08.05 15:43 UTC
My usual morning greeting is, 'hello booflees!'

They all have their own song, which is totally personal to them and they recognise it as their own. Indy has got two songs because I had him from 6 weeks so he has a puppy song and a grown up song. I have entire one way conversations with them, they know all my secrets, all my plans and dreams and all my fears.

Last week I was walking around the park chatting away to them when a young man who was short cutting through stared at me. He gave me a really odd look and almost sneered at me. I stuck my tongue out at him and when he opened his mouth to say something, I pointed to my oldest dog and said, 'he told me to do it.' He looked so completely dumbfounded he didn't utter a word. :D

Anyone who thinks I am weird for talking to my dogs is a sad person as far as I am concerned and I have no time for them. ;)
- By Enfielrotts [eu] Date 09.08.05 15:50 UTC
Well this morning I left my OH who was still in bed a letter from the dogs asking if he could take them on a nice long walk and fill up their paddling pool for them to play in etc etc, I signed it off with iccle paws :) te he he :D Being nutty like that actually keeps me sane in a roundabout way LOL!!!
- By ShaynLola Date 09.08.05 16:21 UTC
This thread has reassured me that I am not alone in my madness :D :D
- By Ioxia [gb] Date 09.08.05 16:24 UTC
Phew such a relief to know i am not alone, as I talk to Coco all the time too. Coco does look at me and i go "Heloo Bootiful, yes your bootiful, aren't you? yes your gorgeous and we love you, don't we, yes we do" Probably sound daft to others but makes perfect sence to me and Coco. Even kids talk to her like that too, lol.

But I am always talking to her as I potter around the house, doing stuff and my shadow is following behind me.
- By LucyD [gb] Date 09.08.05 20:20 UTC
Yes, I confess I not only talk to my dogs constantly, but I speak for them. When my OH comes home and the dogs are coming up to greet them, I'm saying 'hello daddy hello daddy!!' for them! :-D
- By stann [gb] Date 09.08.05 23:36 UTC
i talk and sing to merlin, i even send birthday cards to his nanny and grandma from him, (my mum and nan) and pressies, this may be a bit mad though, depending on how much the pressie costs merlin doesnt have new toys from the pet shop for a couple of weeks to pay for it. Nutter or what. My neighbours laughed at me when they caught me hands on hips telling him if he didnt look after his toys he wouldnt get any more adding a young man on the end when he burst his paddling pool and dragged it aroung the garden. My oh who didnt want a dog and only bought him for me, speaks to him first when he gets home and yaps like mad all in a really high pitched voice. I tell him he is handsome (my dog) and i always say goodnight sleeptight love you before bed.
- By LucyD [gb] Date 10.08.05 06:29 UTC
Yeah, my dogs sent my OH a father's day card this year!! And I sing 'tickly tickly tickly' when I'm rubbing their tummies! At least we are all mad together! :-)
- By Vicki [gb] Date 10.08.05 19:35 UTC
I "sing" happy birthday, replacing the usual words with wuff wuff wuff wuff wuff wuff etc.  It's very sad...... :(
- By Sheltpap Date 10.08.05 20:49 UTC
Mine send birthday/christmas cards and presents.  Very clever dogs really!  I speak so much to my dogs that one of my parrots has started to take me off.
- By Spender Date 10.08.05 21:53 UTC
I have two way conversations with mine, I talk to them and then talk for them, Lol.  Done it all my life and I've lived with dogs for nearly 40 years.

My next door neighbour told me that her friend who called round thought it was rather sweet at how I chat to my dogs.  Opps, I didn't know she heard me.    Never mind, I'm sure the neighbours get some laughs from our doggy conversations :-D
