Hi,
   I'm interested in getting a yorkshire terrier but i would want to keep it short fur. To do this how often would it have to be clipped and would it be expensive?

Different area's have different prices, see if your vet can recommend on, may daughter got a Tibetan Terrier stripped, washed and blown over £25

It costs me £18.50 about every 10-12 weeks for our Bichon Frise to be groomed and have his nails cut (if needed) and the hairs pulled out of his ears.  Wouldn't have thought it would be much more (probably less) for a Yorkie :-)

You should be able to keep a Yorkie neat and tidy yurself.  The hair won't grow as long as in a showdog anyway, as to achiever that look it is oiled/condition and put up in crackers to protect it.  Otherwise it woudl natuarally be worn away when playing.

I certainly wouldn't think one would need clipping just trimming.

Guest I am assuming you mean in a teddy cut.  Clipped yorkies look awful.  They are so thin they look all skin and bones.  I usually charge about £18.00 for cutting one which includes the bath etc.  If you really want them clipped short all over perhaps a long haired breed is not ideal for you.

Unfortunately Brainless not all yorkies fur is worn I have a lady who has to have hers sent to me regulary every 8 weeks just for a general trim as the dog trips over its beard.  Its front part seems to grow about 5 times longer than the rest of its body.  I was lucky when I had mine as they had more of a curly type of fur so never grew that quickly or that long.

If you want a short haired dog why not get

Chihuahua (long or short haired,  hard to find)
Miniature Pinscher - short haired
English Toy Terrier - short haired

All these have naturally shorter coats and are as lively and loveable as a Yorkshire Terrier :D :D

A min pin would be my choice as theya re small but pretty sturdy, nto too different to a yorkie for size, both have pricked ears and docked tails, and a bigger than their size lively personality..

I agree Brainless but personally couldn't stand the sound a Min Pin makes :)  Having said that not all English Toy Terriers are fragile looking,  I know one (show dog) who lives with bigger dogs (20lbs) and he hasn't broken while playing rough :)

A well bred, correct coated Yorkie takes a quick comb each day to keep it in good condition and a quick trim to keep the skirt, ears and under the tail tidy every few months.  I would not clip a Yorkie for the owner's convenience. 
If you want a short coated dog, have a look at Affenpinchers - full of character dogs who don't need trimming.  And, of course, Cavaliers - brilliant family dogs who again, if bred with the correct coat, need minimum attention apart from a quick comb each day.
