Hi has anyone had a dog with Psedomas of the ear? My GSD has had this for over a year now and nothing the vet is giving me is working? would really love to hear from anyone who has had this problem.

Can't say I have any experience with this infection (and hope I never do) but found some info on the web for you :) :D

Know about it in people :d  Could ask one of my consultant's tomorrow and see what he thinks or suggests :d  He thinks I'm mad already and do have to say when we thought that one of my dogs had cancer of the nose he was going to scope her so we may get something useful from him!

Yes I saw this a lot when I worked as a vet nurse. Point number one is that it can be contagious even to people so be careful. Point number two is a lab should be able to test to see exactly WHAT antibitoics will work best. I don't know if this ever is done in the UK but assume it must be possible, in Sweden we always sent off test to labs and they sent back a list of antibioics with details of how effective each type would be for the particular case in question, so it was easy for the vet to prescribe the best kind.

The other thing you may need to consider if things get bad is an aural resection -were the ear canal is surgically opened up to allow more air in, which is done where there are a lot of bad ear infections.

In humans the results come back with what it is sensitive to and resistent to so I would have thought the same thing happens with dogs results??

thank you that was really helpful.I think the next option will be surgery and I now have recurring ear infections and another dog is now coughing but its not kennel cough.so thats a bit of a worry

Hi there,
I am currently studying Burkholderia cepacia which is a very closely related bug to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. I know that both of these bacteris are multi resistant to antibiotics. You could try asking your vet for Polymixin B which is a very effective antibiotic but can only be used topically.

I would get the dogs lungs checked straight away as both B.cepacia and P.aeruginosa cause very severe lung infections (as seen in cystic fibrosis) and once they get hold they are practically impossible to get rid of.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks, we tried Baytrill (unsure of spelling sorry) but this isn't working, last week the vet suggested I try Aurizon?? another vet suggested I wipe it out with white vinegar and someone of this site has tried it and said it was very effective, but not to sure if its used internally or externally. I will ask my vet about Polymixin B.

Thanks :)

don't know in dogs, but my son had it for ages in the end the consultant treated it with drops usually used for eyes - worked really quickly.  May-be could ask vet to look into research on this relating to dogs.  (worth a go)
