My lab bitch tonight presented what I thought was a water sack and then for about an hour had a watery brown liquid coming from her vulva. Nothing more happened so I rang the vet, she says its nothing to worry about. The liquid stopped after an hour but still nothing happened.
I'm really worried. The bitch is 5 years old and an experienced whelper. She normally pops the pups out!!! It is now almost 11pm and she is fast asleep but I can't rest, as I am so worried. Her temperature has been 98c for the last 36 hours. She has dug and panted but now just sleeps.
Should she be at the vets?

I would have her checked over by the vet tonight - I wouldn't leave it till the morning.

I had her checked by the vet and she eventally gave birth to a black dog at 3am. Then a black bitch at 4am.
That was my lot and unfortunately the little dog puppy was PTS this morning due to having a cleft palate!!! I have NEVER had to have an older dog PTS and now dread it. It broke my heart this morning to have this little chap PTS, I feel awful.
I guess he is now running around in the fields of heaven and I told him God would feed him well. The poor thing couldn't feed at all and it was heartbreaking to watch him try to feed but not get anywhere.
I now have one little girl to look after and of course her mother but I feel so down about this little chap.

Nicolla,
What a terrible experience for you, and your girl too. You're right about him being fed in Doggie Heaven though. Dogs get whatever you wish for them in Doggie Heaven, that's how I feel it works. So wish him up a tummy full of warm milk and try to put the whole distressing thing behind you as you focus on your two girls - big and small.

Dear Nicolla,
What a sad thing to happen. In my last litter of labradors one of the male pups only lived for 24 hours then he just stopped feeding and died within hours. I called the vet and tried feeding him myself to no avail. I was heart broken and still cry over him seven months later. I kept his sister and I like to think that in some way he lives on because of her. I hope mum and pup are doing well, it is hard but in time you will feel better, I promise.
Hello Nicolla,
Sorry to hear about your pup - losing an older dog is hard, but after the injection they go much faster than new born puppies, almost instantly as the drug is delivered intraveneously. A horrible subject but just thought I would mention this in case it preys on your mind too much.
Take care
Christine

So sorry to hear about your little dog but you definitely did the right thing. One of my last litter had to be put to sleep because of a cleft and it is heartbreaking, but not as bad as seeing them fade away because they can't suckle. It is one of the reasons I always have my pups checked straight away rather than leave them until one appears to be ill.
Enjoy your girl and her mum, they will both be a great comfort to you.

Hi,Im sorry Im only just catching up with posts on the board,Im so sorry you lost your pup,I lost one with a cleft palate once I know what you feel.
You may like this little poem it was for Izzy our pup who died last year.
Twinkle on Little Star
If you ever look out of your window
and study the stars at night
You may see a little gold star shining
You will see that its twice as bright
We think this gold star is our Puppy
who went up to heaven last year
And Jesus said Hi little Izzy
We really are glad you are here
A special job here needed doing
we know you’re a special one
To guide all the stars that are twinkling
We know you will get the Job done
So if you are a lost lonely traveller
In need of some help from above
Just look for the special star shining
And sent little Izzy our love.

Thanks for that Mattie.
I'm now in floods of tears again but last night I tried to think of Alfie with a big full tummy and fully formed, running around fields full of flowers.
Two years ago I lost Hope, a yellow lab puppy and I'm sure Alfie will have found her by now so at least he's not alone.
I did tell Alfie yesterday that God had chosen him for a special job in heaven and that I'd always love him.
