Topic Dog Boards / General / IS CHIPPING AS SECURE AS TATTOOS
- By brad [gb] Date 02.08.05 23:07 UTC
I posted a mesage some time back but soon after i had a four week break in scotland with my two terriers.and i have been unable to retrace my original message My previous question was that while at a
working dog show earlier in the year a couple of owners where saying that
they had been told that dog thieves are now able to scramble the chip so that it is not possible to pick off the code when scaned, i chose to have both my Lakelands chipped instead of tattoos as being working dogs they do get damaged ears from time to time, upon now hearing this i am rethinking about getting there ears tattooed, Could anyone let me know if there is any truth in this.

Don't know, but having both must be better than just having one or other :D  Muinbe are all tattoed and chipped.

all mine are both tatooed and chipped too.  not heard anything about chips being scrambled but have seen how very easy it is to remove a chip

It is actually easy to scramble a chip. Robert Killick wrote a whole series of articles on identificatioon and among these he did look at if it was possible and how it could be done. One of the easiest ways being to implant a second chip.

I would get your dogs tattooed as well for extra peace of mind, its not too expensive and is worth it if it means your reuinted with your dog again should the worst happen
